If one thing is inevitable about any Scott Coker-led MMA promotion it’s this: There will be a tournament.

Earlier this week, Coker announced his return as the head of an as-yet-to-be-named organization that will launch next year behind a team of investors and familiar faces from the entertainment industry. At the time, details were scarce, but the former Strikeforce and Bellator MMA leader has since offered some more insight into the fledgling promotion in an interview with the New York Post.

According to Coker, the debut date is expected for January 2027 and will be highlighted by “a gauntlet of events that we produce in the first half of the year.” This includes a tournament that will feature a field “way north of eight” fighters. Sergio Pettis will face another up-and-coming talent in the PFL Austin co-headliner.

The former Bellator MMA bantamweight champion will square off against Lewis McGrillen-Evans on July 18 at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas. The bout was announced during the PFL Brussels broadcast on Saturday. PFL Austin is headlined by a middleweight title rematch between Costello van Steenis and Johnny Eblen.

Looking to Rebound Pettis had a two-bout winning streak snapped in his most recent outing at PFL Chicago, where he dropped a unanimous verdict to undefeated newcomer Mitchell McKee on April 11. PFL MENA 9 is now official, but the card did undergo one significant change during Saturday’s weigh-ins.

According to a video posted by PFL MENA on social media, Zakaria Bichi did not make weight for his lightweight tournament bout against Basel Ahmed Shalaan. As a result Shalaan (155.6 pounds) will lock horns with Abdullah Saleem (155.6). Shalaan vs. Saleem was originally supposed to be a showcase bout at PFL MENA 9 before the card underwent other changes. Now it will be part of the 155-pound bracket.

Bichi’s weight was not revealed. In the aforementioned video, a promotion official simply stated that he was “way heavier” and “cannot fight in the lightweight division.”

Headlining the Belgian event is a welterweight fight between mixed martial arts legend Benson Henderson and undefeated rising star Patrick Habirora. Both men had no issue making weight for the five-round main event. There was also one late adjustment to the card as Movsar Ibragimov will no longer face Youssouf Binate at bantamweight and will now take on Shane Campbell in a 140-pound catchweight fight.

World Boxing Council heavyweight titlist Oleksandr Usyk will be the lighter man in his championship defense against kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven.

Both heavyweights weighed in on Friday ahead of tomorrow's championship clash. Ukraine's Usyk is the much smaller man, as he only weighed 233.3 pounds, while the challenger came in at 258.7 pounds. That's a 25-pound difference in favor of Verhoeven. All other boxers on the card successfully made weight.

Ahead of what could be its largest show to date, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has worked with its broadcast partner on some special programming.

Via a release on Thursday from the UFC’s broadcasting partner of Paramount, a documentary focusing on part of Ilia Topuria’s fighting career will be releasing on its streaming platform. The doc will drop on June 1 on Paramount+, a couple weeks before the UFC White House event which is headlined by Topuria against Justin Gaethje for the unified lightweight throne.

On Thursday, perennial middleweight contender Vettori (19-10-1) posted on Instagram that he would no longer be competing at UFC Baku, also known as UFC Fight Night 280. The Italian suffered a rib injury that does not need surgery but will prohibit him from appearing on June 27. He was slated to face Ismail Naurdiev (25-8) at the National Gymnastics Arena in the capital city of Azerbaijan either as the main card opener or preliminary headliner.

Per a press release and post on social media on Thursday, the former head of Strikeforce and Bellator MMA announced himself as returning to run a new MMA organization yet to be named at this time. Based on the email correspondence, it may be coined some variation of “Strike MMA,” but that could be a working title. To garner support to put together a new MMA league, Coker has teamed up with several deep-pocketed investors and names familiar with the entertainment industry.

Of note, Kevin Kay, former President of Paramount as well as Spike TV, will be on the investor and advisory group running this org. He has also gained the support of ex-Viacom chief financial officer Wade Davis, former Sony Pictures TV chair Steve Mosko, owner of D.C. United and a massive asset management company Steve Kaplan. Dricus Du Plessis isn’t buying the notion that Khamzat Chimaev was hindered by a weight cut ahead of his championship defeat to Sean Strickland at UFC 328.

Chimaev looked drained at weigh-ins ahead of the bout, and after the loss, both Arman Tsarukyan and his brother, Artur, claimed that the Chechen fighter’s performance was affected by the cut. “Borz” appeared to gas out significantly on a failed takedown in Round 2, though he recovered to make the fight compeitive in what was ultimately a split-decision defeat.

Du Plessis, who lost the middleweight belt to Chimaev in a lopsided decision at UFC 319 last August, wasn’t swayed by the explanations.

Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson are still expected to square off this year, but the exhibition boxing match will take place later than anticipated.

That’s according to a press release from CSI Sport/Fight Sports, which claims to have secured agreements from both boxers. While previous reports had Mayweather vs. Tyson scheduled for April 25 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the release states that the bout was slated for May 30. However, the booking was postponed as Tyson recovers from a broken hand.
