Ahead of the final fight on his
Ultimate Fighting Championship contract, Sam Alvey
needed the extra time but managed to make weight.
The UFC is all set to return to ESPN airwaves with
UFC on ESPN 40, a card that features a light heavyweight
headliner between former title challenger Thiago
Santos and rising contender Jamahal
Hill. While both main eventers and all four finalists of „The
Ultimate Fighter“ Season 30 had no trouble making weight, there was
one notable miss. Ariane
Lipski failed to hit the flyweight limit, weighing 128.5 pounds
for her bout against Priscila
Cachoeira (125.5). Additionally, Alvey (186) initially came in
one pound over the middleweight limit for his fight with Michal
Oleksiejczuk (185.5), but he elected to keep cutting and hit
his proper marks in time. Lipski has been fined a percentage of her
purse, and her match with Cachoeira will otherwise continue as
scheduled.
Ever since losing to Jon Jones via
a close split decision, Santos (22-10) has struggled inside the
Octagon. „Marreta“ has dropped three of his last four fights, aside
from a ho-hum decision win over Johnny
Walker. In his last appearance, Santos fell victim to the
dominant Magomed
Ankalaev across their five-round encounter. The 38-year-old
Brazilian will need to show he has more to offer here if he looks
to stay a contender. Santos officially weighed 206 pounds.
While a defeat to Paul Craig
last year derailed the undefeated record of Hill (10-1, 1 NC), the
American has since bounced back with clean knockouts of Jimmy Crute
and Walker. This finishing power has catapulted „Sweet Dreams“ to
his second-straight UFC main event. Hill officially weighed 205
pounds on the dot as he looks to make it three in a row.
The entire UFC on ESPN 40 card will air simulcast on ESPN and ESPN+
on Saturday. The main card begins at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT, while
the prelims open up at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
