A mix-up allegedly caused Oscar De La Hoya to miss Ryan Garcia’s
walkout.

Garcia put his WBC welterweight title on the line against Conor
Benn in the main event of a Zuffa Boxing card at T-Mobile Arena in
Las Vegas on Sept. 12. Fighting on Mexican Independence Day
weekend, Garcia expected Mexican-American icon De La Hoya to attend
his fight and even revealed that he had invited “The Golden Boy” to
walk him out for his fight against Benn.

Golden Boy says a fight-day mix-up kept Oscar De La Hoya from
Garcia vs. Benn

Garcia was slightly disappointed to see De La Hoya missing from the
event altogether.

“I thought he was gonna be here…” Garcia said after his
second-round knockout win over Benn. “I actually invited him to
walk out with me. I thought that was gonna be iconic. Everybody was
asking where he was.”

Director of De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, Jane Murcia, claims
that the Olympic gold medalist missed Garcia’s walkout due to a
mix-up. Murcia claims Garcia had invited De La Hoya to walk him out
along with fellow Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez.

However, De La Hoya was allegedly told on the morning of the fight
that Garcia had changed his mind and wanted to walk out with
musician Marco Antonio Barrera and WWE legend Rey Mysterio instead.
Garcia eventually walked out with Barrera and Mysterio.

“I want to clarify this because there seems to be some confusion,
and it genuinely makes me sad to think Ryan is under the impression
that Oscar did not want to walk him out,” Murcia wrote on X. “Yes,
Ryan invited Oscar to walk him out ALONG WITH Julio Cesar Chavez
Sr. That was the “big surprise” ODLH teased on his IG. The morning
of the fight, however, we received a call from Ryan’s team
informing us that Ryan had changed his mind and no longer wanted
ODLH to walk him out. We were told he wanted Rey Mysterio and
Barrera to walk him out instead.”
