Dustin
Poirier’s retirement could be drawing near.
Poirier revealed that his retirement fight is likely in the workds
for the
Ultimate Fighting Championship’s return to New Orleans this
summer. It would be the perfect setting for “The Diamond” to hang
up his gloves in front of his home fans in Louisiana.
“I actually have been having calls every week with the UFC,”
Poirier recently told The Schmo. “But it’s looking like summer in
New Orleans is close to happening for my retirement fight. The
pay-per-view this summer in New Orleans would be incredible. That’s
what I’m pushing forward for. That’s what the UFC is working
towards and things are getting pretty close… Lay the gloves down
where it all started, in Louisiana would be an honor for me.
Hopefully we get an announcement soon so I can stop beating around
the bush in these interviews.”
When asked if he’s fighting a fresh opponent or rematching a former
foe, Poirier quirkily replied: “My name is Bennett and I ain’t in
it.”
Poirier is one of the biggest fan favorites in UFC history to have
never tasted championship glory. The Louisianan suffered his first
failed title bid against Khabib
Nurmagomedov via submission in 2019. He bounced back with a
three-fight winning streak, including back-to-back victories over
Conor
McGregor to earn another title shot. However, he fell short yet
again via submission, this time against Charles
Oliveira. While Poirier earned yet another shot by upsetting
the up-and-coming Benoit St.
Denis, he suffered his third failed title attempt against
Islam
Makhachev last year.
