Diego
Lopes was recently overwhelmed with emotions while speaking of
his family.
Lopes challenges Alexander
Volkanovski for the vacant featherweight title in the main
event at UFC
314 on Saturday at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida. The
Brazilian recently received a compilation video of his family
members wishing him luck going into his first UFC title fight.
Lopes was clearly overwhelmed by the video and shed some tears
while discussing his family. The UFC star left home more than a
decade ago, promising to return only when he could afford a better
life for his family. After having lived up to his promise, Lopes
now wants to seal the deal by winning the title against Volkanovski
on Saturday.
“It’s great to know that there are so many people who support me,
especially my family,” Lopes said in an interview with the UFC. “I
left them 11 years ago, when I left home. I remember I was very
clear with my mother, with my father, with my brothers — that I was
only going to come home one day when I could give them a better
life. Each person who appeared in this video is a special person in
my life. I know that every fighter has their story, every fighter
has a story of sacrifices and things that have happened in their
lives. But I think the way things have turned around in my life and
career professionally, it’s been completely different. So I think
the way to make them good is to win the title on Saturday.”
After paying his dues on the Brazilian regional circuit, Lopes was
a full-time jiu-jitsu coach at the Lobo Gym MMA in Mexico. Lopes
made his UFC debut in 2023 on five days’ notice against undefeated
contender Movsar
Evloev, where he dropped a hard-fought unanimous decision. He
then soared to stardom by racking up a five-fight winning streak
with three first round finishes.
