Dana White once again assured the
UFC fanbase that Jon Jones vs.
Tom
Aspinall is happening.
The Jones and Aspinall fight has been in the making for over a year
now. Jones won the heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane
at UFC 285 in 2023 after returning to action from a three-year
hiatus. He was then supposed to defend it against Stipe
Miocic at UFC 295 later that year, but was forced out with an
injury. Aspinall went on to win a short-notice interim title fight
against Sergei
Pavlovich, as Miocic refused to fight anyone but
Jones.
Despite Aspinall being the interim champ, Jones remained adamant on
defending his title against Miocic, which he finally did at UFC 309
in November 2024. Meanwhile, Aspinall defended his interim belt
against Curtis
Blaydes at UFC 304 in July 2024.
Aspinall has incessantly been rallying for a title unifier against
Jones, who seemingly hasn’t yet received an offer lucrative enough
to fight the Englishman. Jones keeps repeating that his legacy is
already cemented, but doesn’t objectively say that he won’t fight
Aspinall. Meanwhile, Dana White has said that Jones will have to
fight Aspinall next if he fights at all. He has repeatedly said
that the fight is close to being finalized and recently doubled
down on the same.
While announcing the UFC 317
fight card, White responded to fans asking about Jones vs.
Aspinall: “I told you guys already. We’ll get Aspinall vs. Jones
done. Jon
Jones vs. [Aspinall]… That heavyweight fight will happen.
Relax. I’ll announce that soon.”
Meanwhile, Aspinall has clearly voiced his frustration with the
lack of activity. “Honey Badger” is even willing to face other
opponents, but the UFC seemingly doesn’t want him to do
so.
