Aljamain
Sterling could move ahead of Jean Silva
for a featherweight title shot, according to Alexander
Volkanovski.
The reigning champion considers Silva a leading contender for a
shot at 145-pound gold in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship, but believes Sterling could
strengthen his case by beating Kevin
Vallejos at
UFC Qatar on Nov. 21.

Why Alexander Volkanovski thinks Aljamain Sterling can earn the
next featherweight title shot
Volkanovski said Sterling would be more deserving with another
victory, while a defeat would leave Silva as his preferred
contender.
“When we’re talking about who deserves it more, I’m gonna say
Aljo,” Volkanovski told Ariel Helwani. “Especially after another
win, taking a fight against a dangerous guy like Kevin. It is
really up to that fight, I believe. Silva’s in a great position; I
think he needs to just wait and see what happens with Aljo.”
Volkanovski (29-4) retained the featherweight title against
Movsar
Evloev (20-1), stopping the previously unbeaten Russian in the
second round of the
UFC 333 main event on Oct. 24 in Abu Dhabi.
After losing the bantamweight title to Sean
O’Malley, Sterling (26-5) beat Calvin
Kattar in his featherweight debut. He then lost a decision to
Evloev before rebounding with victories over Brian
Ortega and Youssef
Zalal. Meanwhile, Silva (17-3) has finished six of his seven
UFC victories, with his lone promotional defeat coming against
Diego
Lopes. He joined the organization after earning a contract on
Dana White’s Contender Series.
Volk believes Aljamain
Sterling deserves the next featherweight title shot over
Jean
Silva if he beats Kevin
Vallejos: „When we’re talking about who deserves it more, I’m
gonna say Aljo. Especially after another win, taking a fight
against a dangerous guy like Kevin. But if Aljo loses, then I think
it’s just Jean. I think it really is up to that fight.“— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani)
