Demetrious
Johnson, who is widely regarded as the top flyweight in mixed
martial arts history, will be enshrined in the
UFC Hall of Fame this summer.
The Las Vegas-based promotion announced Johnson’s induction during
the
UFC Seattle broadcast on Saturday. “Mighty Mouse” will enter
the Hall of Fame’s Modern Wing. Johnson is often mentioned with the
the likes of Anderson
Silva, Georges St.
Pierre, Jon Jones,
Fedor
Emelianenko and Khabib Nurmagomeodv as one of the greatest
fighters of all-time, regardless of weight class

“Demetrious Johnson is the greatest flyweight of all-time,” said
UFC CEO Dana White. “Demetrious was a great champion who had one of
the most incredible careers in MMA, and his streak of 11
consecutive title defenses is one of the most remarkable records
we’ve ever seen in professional sports. It will be an honor to
induct him into the UFC Hall of Fame this summer.”
Johnson captured the UFC’s inaugural flyweight crown by besting
Joseph
Benavidez at UFC 152 in September 2012. The Kirkland,
Washington native would go on to defend the 125-pound strap 11
times before relinquishing the belt to Henry
Cejudo in a split-decision loss at UFC 227. During his Octagon
tenure, Johnson earned victories over the likes of Cejudo,
Benavidez (twice), John Dodson
(twice), Kyoji
Horiguchi, Ali
Bagautinov, Ray Borg and
Tim
Elliott, among others.
Making More History
Following that loss to Cejudo, “Mighty Mouse” was part of a
historic trade between the UFC and ONE
Championship. While Johnson was sent to the Singapore-based
organization, the UFC received Ben Askren in
return.
Johnson went 5-1 during his ONE tenure, rebounding from his lone
defeat to claim the promotion’s 135-pound title with a knockout of
Adriano
Moraes. Johnson would defeat Moraes again in a trilogy bout
before
announcing his retirement in 2024. The flyweight star became
the first inductee in the ONE Hall of Fame shortly thereafter.
Some of the UFC records Johnson holds include: longest title reign
in flyweight history (2,142 days), longest winning streak (13),
most title fight wins (12).
