The
Ultimate Fighting Championship posts up in New York for a
heavyweight title fight between reigning champion Jon Jones and
a returning Stipe
Miocic.
As expected, both UFC
309 main event fighters successfully came in under the
265-pound limit. Jones will be the smaller fighter as Miocic
weighed 248.6 pounds, while the champion came in at 237.6 pounds.
All other fighters successfully made weight except for James
Llontop, who came in 1.2 pounds over for his 165-pound
catchweight fight against Mauricio
Ruffy. The fight will continue, with Llontop being fined 20% of
his purse.
Jones (27-1, 1 NC) is currently riding a five-fight win streak
since his second victory over Daniel
Cormier was overturned due to a failed drug test. „Bones“ won
the vacant heavyweight title by submitting Ciryl Gane
with a guillotine choke in just over two minutes. This will mark
the second heavyweight fight for the former light heavyweight
king.
Meanwhile, this is the first fight for Miocic (20-4) since he was
knocked out by Francis
Ngannou in 2021. The 42-year-old firefighter previously won
back-to-back title fights against Cormier. The former UFC
heavyweight champ also holds wins over a who’s who of the division,
including Ngannou, Junior dos
Santos, Alistair
Overeem and more.
UFC 309’s ESPN+ pay-per-view will begin at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT on
Saturday. Prelims begin at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT on ESPN+ and UFC
Fight Pass before moving to ESPNews and ESPN+ at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m.
PT.
