One Championship will be breaking new ground in
2024 in the Middle East.
Per the organization on Thursday, ONE will be running ONE
166: Qatar on March 1. The event at the Lusail Sports Arena in
Lusail, Qatar, will bring five separate championship bouts across
their four disciplines. The league has not yet stated which titles
will be on the line, but that belts will be up for grabs through
their MMA, muay thai, kickboxing and submission grappling
disciplines. No fights have currently been announced.
Abdulaziz Ali Al Mawlawi, the chief marketing and promotion officer
for Qatar Tourism, spoke highly of this new event, writing in the
release, “Qatar Tourism is delight to be the official event host,
presenting partner, and VIP lounge sponsor of what will be the
biggest One Championship event the region has ever seen. This
exciting addition to Qatar’s world-class roster of events
reinforces our commitment to bringing exceptional experiences that
resonate with local and global audiences. As we strategically
position ourselves as a hub for diverse and dynamic experiences,
the partnership with ONE Championship showcases our dedication to
hosting world-class sports and entertainment year-round for
residents and visitors to enjoy.”
The promotion has pushed hard for its expansion outside of
Southeast Asia, as it has run the majority of its events over the
last few years in Singapore and Thailand. Of note, ONE ran an event
in America for the first time this year in Broomfield, Colorado,
home of the first Ultimate Fighting Championship card. At that
blockbuster May show, Demetrious Johnson and Adriano Moraes engaged
in their rubber match for the 135-pound strap.
The next major One Championship event on the docket will be ONE on
Prime Video 17, which will carry an all-muay thai slate on Dec. 8.
The card at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok will be headlined by
a heavyweight championship scrap between Roman Kryklia and Alex
Roberts. The co-main attraction will come at 155 pounds as Jo
Nattawut faces Luke Lessei.
