The Ultimate Fighting Championship appears to have
locked in the main and co-main attractions for its late September
Fight Night show.
Per the UFC’s broadcast partner of ESPN
on Thursday, the promotion has established its top two fights for
the
UFC Fight Night card on Sept. 23. Atop the event likely staged
inside of the UFC Apex in Las Vegas will be a lightweight affair
between Rafael
Fiziev (12-2) and Mateusz
Gamrot (22-2, 1 NC). In the co-featured attraction,
featherweights Bryce
Mitchell (15-1) and Dan Ige (17-6)
will get to finally settle a beef that has gone on for years.
Fiziev saw his six-fight win streak come to a screeching halt in
March when Justin
Gaethje outworked him over three thrilling rounds. That loss
concluded a decent stretch of victories including three knockouts,
where he put Renato
Carneiro, Brad
Riddell and Rafael dos
Anjos out on his way up the lightweight division. The defeat to
Gaethje is the Tiger Muay Thai striking coach’s first to occur any
later than 1:26 of the fight, as his promotional debut in 2019
ended violently via spinning back kick from Magomed
Mustafaev.
Gamrot also compete most recently back in March, although his
outing was much more successful as he beat Jalin
Turner on the scorecards. This put a decision loss to Beneil
Dariush in the rear-view mirror. Prior to coming up short to
Dariush in late 2022, Gamrot had dispatched Scott
Holtzman, Jeremy
Stephens and Diego
Ferreira, while taking a hard-fought five-rounder against
Arman
Tsarukyan in mid-2022.
Back in December, Mitchell suffered his first career loss when he
succumbed to an arm-triangle from the surging Ilia
Topuria. Prior to that unsuccessful appearance, “Thug Nasty”
had won six straight in the Octagon. With five decision victories
and one single win by submission, Mitchell landed the second
twister in company history when he tapped Matt Sayles
with one at UFC on ESPN 7 in 2019. The Arkansas native has still
yet to procure a win via knockout, with all nine of his finishes
from tapouts.
Never finished in his professional career, “50K” Ige has bounced
back and forth in the win/loss columns as he navigated the waters
at featherweight. While he struggled greatly in 2021 into 2022, the
31-year-old from Hawaii has come out the other side in 2023.
Sparking Damon
Jackson at the first UFC card of the year, Ige went on to
outduel Nate
Landwehr in June to put himself on his first win streak since
2020.
The UFC Fight Night event on Sept. 23 will likely go down in Las
Vegas at the UFC Apex. While the newly announced headliner and
co-main are on the books, the company already had a few other
fights matched up for that night. In a featherweight clash of
styles, Charles
Jourdain will face off against Ricardo
Ramos. Heavyweights will also toe the line, when Jake
Collier and Mohammed
Usman share the cage. Finally, Mizuki
Inoue and Hannah
Goldy will square off in a strawweight contest, while Tamires
Vidal meets Montserrat
Rendon at 135 pounds.
