UFC on ESPN 21 weigh-ins were memorable for the wrong reasons,
after Julija
Stoliarenko fainted on the scale. Stoliarenko stumbled once on the scales and was attended to by
medical personnel. The commission still allowed her to weigh in,
and she did hit the 135.5-pound mark. Unfortunately for the
Lithuanian, she collapsed again, and needed to be stretchered out
of the room. As a result, Stoliarenko’s bantamweight bout against
Julia
Avila was called off due to medical concerns.
While that fight is scratched, the
Ultimate Fighting Championship‘s main event is good to go as
both Derek
Brunson and Kevin
Holland made weight. They’ll look to make their case for a
middleweight title shot on Saturday. The card is now official with
11 fights, and only Jesse
Strader missed weight.
This is the fifth UFC main event for Brunson (21-7), who has split
wins and losses in his previous top-billed bouts. The Sanford MMA
product is riding a three-fight win streak since getting knocked
out by Ronaldo
Souza and current champ Israel
Adesanya. This includes victories over Edmen
Shahbazyan and Ian
Heinisch. Brunson tipped the scale at 186 pounds.
Meanwhile, this will be the first chance that Holland (21-5) will
have at headlining a UFC card. “Trailblazer” is on an impressive
five-fight win streak that includes a knockout of Souza and a
brutal slam TKO over Charlie
Ontiveros. All five fights came in Holland’s busy 2020, which
saw him bounce back from a submission loss to Brendan
Allen in tremendous fashion. The 28-year-old had no issue
making weight, coming in at 183 pounds.
UFC on ESPN 21’s main card will air on both ESPN and ESPN+ starting
at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. The six-fight preliminary portion will
start at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on ESPN2 and ESPN+.
