UFC Fight Night 214 was nearly one the record books, but not in
a good way.

While consummate professionals Marina
Rodriguez and Amanda
Lemos both weighed in on target in hopes of making a statement
inside the
Ultimate Fighting Championship‘s strawweight division, four
other competitors on the bill could not say the same. The promotion
has never before staged a fight card with five bouts that contained
an athlete that could not make weight, and one of initially five
heavy fighters made sure this fight card would not set that dubious
record.
Ramona
Pascual (137) missed weight by one pound for her match against
Tamires
Vidal (134). To make matters worse, Benito
Lopez (138.5) and Carlos
Candelario (128.5) each came in 2.5 pounds overweight for their
contests against Mario
Bautista (135.5) and Jake Hadley
(126), respectively. Additionally, former featherweight Grant
Dawson (157.5) weighed in 1.5 pounds above the lightweight
limit before his pairing with Mark O.
Madsen (155). Finally, Shanna
Young (126) weighed in first at 127 pounds, only to chop
off some hair and come back on weight within the hour allowance
issued. The remainder will accept fines of 20% or higher and hope
their matches will otherwise continue as scheduled.
This marks the third UFC main event in four fights for Rodriguez
(16-1-2). The Brazilian has won four straight fights, and is
looking to break into title contention with a victory. Most
recently, Rodriguez picked up decision wins over Xiaonan Yan,
Mackenzie
Dern and Michelle
Waterson-Gomez. The Brazilian officially weighed 115.5
pounds.

Meanwhile, Lemos (12-2-1) bounced back
from a submission defeat to Jessica
Andrade by tapping Waterson-Gomez with a guillotine choke
earlier this year. “Amandinha” has won six of her last seven inside
the UFC, and is on an impressive run that includes four finishes
along the way. Lemos came in at 114.5 pounds for her second
five-round fight to make the headliner official.
UFC Fight Night 214 airs entirely on ESPN+ on Saturday. Prelims
begin at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT, while the main card kicks off at 7
p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
