Former
Cage Fury Fighting Championships titleholder Jared
Gordon made a triumphant return to the
Ultimate Fighting Championship’s lightweight division, as he
eked out a split decision over Joe Solecki
in the featured
UFC Fight Night 193 prelim on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las
Vegas.
All three cageside judges scored it 29-28: Derek Cleary for
Solecki, Sal D’Amato and Dave Hagen
for Gordon. It was his first outing at 155 pounds in nearly two
years. Afterward, the Sanford MMA export set his sights on a
showdown with top British prospect Paddy
Pimblett.
Everything went according to plan for Solecki (11-3, 3-1 UFC) in
the first round, where he took down “Flash” inside the first 20
seconds, transitioned to full mount and eventually advanced to the
back. Once there, he piled up points with ground-and-pound and
fished for a potential submission. His efforts, while considerable,
went for naught. Gordon (18-4, 6-3 UFC) survived and turned the
tide in the middle stanza with forward pressure, superior standup
and punishing takedown defense. The newfound momentum carried him
through the third round, where he kept a visibly fatigued and
frustrated Solecki at bay with jabs, hooks and sporadic leg
kicks.
Undefeated O’Neill Buries Shevchenko
Xtreme Couture prospect Casey O’Neill kept her perfect professional
record intact and did so in style, as she took care of Antonina
Shevchenko with punches in the second round of their women’s
flyweight encounter. The unbeaten O’Neill (8-0, 3-0 UFC) sealed it
4:47 into Round 2.
Shevchenko (9-4, 3-4 UFC) enjoyed some success at the outset and
managed to scramble into top position, at which point she climbed
to a crucifix and dropped elbows. O’Neill was undeterred. The
23-year-old former Eternal MMA champion pressured Shevchenko onto
her back foot in the second round, executed a takedown,
transitioned to the back and ultimately achieved full mount. From
there, O’Neill
slammed unanswered elbows, punches and hammerfists into the Tiger
Muay Thai mainstay’s face until the job was done.
O’Neill has finished her last four opponents.
Rosa Decision Retires Correia
Parana Vale Tudo’s Karol Rosa
outstruck and outmaneuvered the retiring Bethe
Correia to a unanimous decision in a three-round women’s
bantamweight scrap. All three cageside judges scored it for Rosa
(15-3, 4-0 UFC): 30-27, 30-27 and 30-26.
Correia (11-6-1, 5-6-1 UFC) tried to fight fire with fire but
lacked the weaponry necessary to give her opponent pause. Rosa
blasted the former title challenger with devastating combinations,
her spear often tipped with close-quarters knee strikes to the
body. She upped her aggression once Correia began to tire, as she
integrated ringing hooks from both hands, leg kicks and the
occasional standing elbow. It was not the sendoff for which Correia
had hoped.
The 26-year-old Rosa will carry a six-fight winning streak into her
next assignment.
Mullarkey Comeback Sinks Smith
Former Brace MMA champion Jamie
Mullarkey withstood an inauspicious start and struck down
Factory X standout Devonte
Smith with punches in the second round of their lightweight
confrontation. Mullarkey (14-4, 2-2 UFC) drew the curtain 2:51 into
Round 2, as he notched his sixth win in eight appearances.
Smith (11-3, 3-2 UFC) staggered the Aussie with a left hook in the
first round and later cracked him with multi-level combinations
that included jabs and close-range knee strikes. Mullarkey
rebounded in the second, where he pressed a merciless pace. He
scored with a sweeping left hook upstairs, pushed Smith to the cage
and flurried with punches, knees and standing elbows. Mullarkey
then drove the Dana White’s Contender Series graduate to the canvas
with a
pair of left hooks to the body and pounced with punches and
hammerfists for the finish.
Mullarkey, 27, has delivered 13 of his 14 professional victories by
knockout, technical knockout or submission.
Silva de Andrade Counter KOs Pirrello
Corinthians MMA export Douglas
Silva de Andrade wiped out Gaetano
Pirrello with a wicked counter left hook in the first round of
their featherweight tilt. Still winless inside the Octagon,
Pirrello (15-7-1, 0-2 UFC) hit the deck 2:04 into Round 1.
Silva de Andrade (27-4, 5-4 UFC) let his hands fly, backed the
Belgian to the fence and connected with a leg kick after moving
back into open space. Soon after, Pirrello pressed forward behind a
kick,
ran into the counter and fell to the canvas in a dazed state.
Silva de Andrade met him there with a burst of hammerfists before
referee Chris Tognoni arrived on the scene.
It was the 11th first-round finish of Silva de Andrade’s
career.
Egger Elbow Stops Young
Stephanie
Egger put away former King of the Cage champion Shanna
Young with an elbow strike in the second round of their women’s
bantamweight affair. Young (7-4, 0-2 UFC) bowed out 2:22 into Round
2, as she lost for the third time in four outings.
Egger (6-2, 1-1 UFC) set the tone in the clinch, a position from
which the Swiss judoka executed multiple takedowns. She dumped
Young to the mat roughly 90 seconds into the second round, chipped
away with ground-and-pound and slammed the fight-ending elbow into
her forehead. Egger then moved in for the kill as her counterpart
shielded herself and turned away from contact, necessitating
the stoppage.
The 33-year-old Egger has won four of her past five bouts.
Perez Armbar Submits Eduardo
“The Ultimate Fighter Latin America” Season 1 winner Alejandro
Perez submitted former Shooto Brazil champion Johnny
Eduardo with a modified armbar in the second round of their
bantamweight pairing. Eduardo (28-13, 3-5 UFC) capitulated 4:13
into Round 2, suffering his third consecutive defeat.
A tepid first period gave way to a more eventful second. Perez
(22-8-1, 8-3-1 UFC) answered a takedown with one of his own,
shifted from full guard to side control, trapped the Nova Uniao rep
in a headlock and isolated the arm with his legs. He then
activated his hips to prompt a tapout from the 43-year-old
Eduardo.
The win was Perez’s first since July 14, 2018.
