your smart TV, computer, phone, tablet or streaming device via the
ESPN app. Fans can breathe a sigh of relief as every fighter for
Saturday’s
Ultimate Fighting Championship card hit their proper marks,
including a backup competitor.
The UFC will hold its first of four events in September this
Saturday as heavyweight contenders Alistair
Overeem and Augusto
Sakai clash in the main event of
UFC Fight Night 176. The latest card from the UFC Apex features
nine bouts in total, and one fighter was also called in to make
weight as a potential replacement in case the coronavirus
struck.
After a big TKO win over Walt Harris
earlier this year, Overeem (46-18, 1 NC) will look to prove that he
still has one more run left in him. The 40-year-old had been on a
two-fight win streak over Alexey
Oleynik and Sergei
Pavlovich until Jairzinho
Rozenstruik shockingly knocked him out with just four seconds
left in their five-round bout at
UFC on ESPN 7. “The Demolition Man” officially weighed 252.5
pounds for his 66th mixed martial arts bout.
Eleven years younger than his opponent, Sakai (15-1-1) is riding an
impressive six-fight win streak after suffering the only defeat of
his career to Cheick
Kongo. Sakai most recently won a split decision over Blagoy
Ivanov and knocked out Marcin
Tybura. The Brazilian looks to notch the biggest win of his
career against Overeem. Sakai stepped on the scales and came in
under the heavyweight limit at 261.5 pounds.
Although not scheduled to compete, Ray
Rodriguez hit the scales at 145 pounds in the event that
Kevin
Natividad tests positive again for COVID-19. On Thursday,
Natividad tested
both positive and negative for the virus. While the promotion
believes the first test was a false positive, Rodriguez was brought
in and placed on standby.
The entirety of UFC Fight Night 176 will stream on ESPN+. The
prelims start at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT, while the main card will kick
off at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
