your smart TV, computer, phone, tablet or streaming device via the
ESPN app. The fight to potentially determine the greatest
Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight of all time is now
official.
The highlight of the UFC’s second residency at UFC Apex is UFC
252. The pay-per-view event is headlined by the third meeting
between current heavyweight king Stipe
Miocic and top rival Daniel
Cormier.
It was Miocic (19-3) who came out on top in their last meeting at
UFC
241, regaining the heavyweight championship he had lost to
Cormier in 2018. The fight was a back-and-forth affair that saw
Cormier ahead early until Miocic was able to win by TKO in the
fourth round. Prior to dropping the title, Miocic was on a historic
run that saw him defend the belt he won against Fabricio
Werdum against Francis
Ngannou, Junior dos
Santos and Alistair
Overeem. The Ohio native looked prepared on the scales and came
in at a trim 233 pounds.
Cormier (22-2, 1 NC) has been upfront about wanting to retire after
this third bout with Miocic, and hopes to leave the sport with a
belt around his waist. Prior to losing to Miocic, Cormier had been
on an impressive streak that saw him hold both the light
heavyweight and heavyweight belts – although “DC” later vacated the
205-pound throne. The 41-year-old tipped the scales at 236 pounds
for what very well might be the final fight of his career.
While the 11-fight card is now official, two fighters came in over
the featherweight limit: Herbert
Burns (149.5)* and T.J. Brown
(146.5)**. Both fighters have been fined a percentage of their
purses and the fights should continue as scheduled.
UFC 252’s main card will exclusively be available as a pay-per-view
on ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET. Prior to that, preliminary action will
begin on ESPN+ and UFC Fight Pass at 7 p.m. ET, and continues on
both ESPN and ESPN+ at 8 p.m. ET.
