The Japanese promotion recently announced the event, entitled
“World Series in Korea,” at a press conference. The event will take
place at Paradise City in Incheon, South Korea on May 31. Not every
bout on the card follows the country vs. country theme, as the
evening’s featured pairing will see Rizin lightweight champion
Roberto
Satoshi de Souza lock horns with Gladiator lightweight king
Won Bin
Ki. However, the majority of the lineup does follow the
aforementioned format.
Other MMA bouts confirmed for
Rizin “World Series in Korea” include: Soo Chul
Kim vs. Shoko Sato at
bantamweight; Juri Ohara
vs. Johnny Case
at lightweight; Hyuk Min Ji
vs. Koji Takeda
at featherweight; Ji Yong
Yang vs. Yuto
Hokamura at bantamweight; Young Jae
Song vs. Yoshiki
Nakahara at featherweight; Yu Ri Shim
vs. Keito Oyama
at super atomweight; Si Won Kim
vs. Sho
Patrick Usami at lightweight and Yong Cheol
Kwon vs. Kota Miura
at a 139-pound catchweight.
Two kickboxing bouts — Sang Hae Jo vs. Hide Meison Usmai and Beom
Jun Kang vs. Seiya Inoue — were also announced for the event.
De Souza has won three straight contests under the Rizin banner,
finishing each of his opponents inside of a round. Most recently,
the 35-year-old Brazilian dispatched Vugar
Karamov with a triangle choke 4:45 into the opening stanza of
their clash on New Year’s Eve.
In addition to being a Gladiator (Japan) title holder, Ki has twice
competed on the Road to UFC series. In his last outing, the Seoul,
South Korea, native scored a second-round TKO win over Tatsuya
Saika at part of the Road to UFC Season 3 card in May 2024.
