The stage has been set for Rory
MacDonald’s long-awaited Professional Fighters League
debut.
The former Bellator welterweight champion tipped the scales at
170.6 pounds for his headlining matchup with Curtis
Millender at PFL 2. Millender, who is also making his
promotional debut, checked in at 171 pounds.
The PFL’s second regular season event takes place at Ocean Casino
Resort in Atlantic City, N.J., on Thursday and will feature
welterweights and light heavyweights. The evening’s main card airs
on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, while prelims stream on ESPN+
beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. PT.
Not everything went as smooth during weigh-ins on Wednesday.
Vinny
Magalhaes was ruled medically unable to compete, and as a
result, Askar
Mozharov (205) has stepped in to face Jordan
Young (205.8) in a preliminary light heavyweight bout.
MacDonald enters the PFL on the heels of a 3-2-1 stint with
Bellator. He captured the promotion’s 170-pound belt with a
five-round verdict over Douglas
Lima at Bellator 192 but failed in a bid to become a
two-division champion when he fell to middleweight king Gegard
Mousasi at Bellator 206. “The Red King” then made it to the
finals of the Bellator welterweight grand prix before relinquishing
the title to Lima in a rematch in October 2019. Prior to that he
was a top contender at 170 pounds in the UFC, falling to Robbie
Lawler in a memorable title clash in July 2015.
Millender has lost three of his last four professional outings
heading into his first PFL foray. Most recently, he dropped a
unanimous verdict against Sabah
Homasi at Bellator 243 last August. The 33-year-old CSW member
enjoyed his greatest success from 2016 to 2018, when he authored a
nine-bout winning streak that included victories over Thiago
Alves, Max Griffin
and Siyar
Bahadurzada in the UFC.
