Mike Tyson Illness Postpones July 20 Boxing Match With Jake Paul

Legendary boxer Mike Tyson needs to heal up and recover before
getting back to the ring again.

Tyson (50-6, 2 NC; 44 KOs) was slated to take on Jake Paul
(9-1, 6 KOs) on July 20 in a modified pro boxing match. The two
were expected to tangle at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington,
Texas. However, Tyson suffered a medical issue involving an ulcer
on Sunday during a flight, and medical professional had to tend to
him. This has resulted in Tyson being forced to stop training for a
few weeks, until his recovery allows him to do so without limits.
Due to this, the event has been postponed to a future date, one
that will be announced on June 7.

The fight, and potentially the remainder of the card, will still be
held in the same building. Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions
organization has stated in a press release that all tickets already
purchased will be honored, while refunds are available for those
that request them.

“I want to thank my fans around the world for their support and
understanding during this time,” the soon-to-be 58-year-old wrote
in a statement. “Unfortunately, due to my ulcer flareup, I have
been advised by my doctor to lighten my training for a few weeks to
rest and recover. My body is in better overall shape than it has
been since the 1990s and I will be back to my full training
scheduled soon. Jake Paul,
this may have bought you some time, but in the end you will still
be knocked out and out of boxing for good. I appreciate everyone’s
patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance
later this year.”

Paul also included a brief statement, where he had no issues with
bumping the fight until Tyson is able to train unencumbered.

“I fully support postponing the event so Mike Tyson has no excuses
come fight night. My fans know I don’t want to face ‘Iron Mike’ at
anything but his best, but let there be no mistake—when he steps
into the ring with me, I will be ready to claim my ‘W’ with a
sensational finish. Paul vs. Tyson will be one for the ages, and I
promise to bring my best for this once-in-a-lifetime matchup,” Paul
stated.

It is currently unclear if the other four fights on the undercard
will stay intact for this postponed date. In the co-headliner spot,
Katie Taylor was set to defend her lightweight belt against
Amanda
Serrano
. In other matches, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. planned on
facing Darren Till
in a cruiserweight contest, lightweights Ashton Sylve and Floyd
Schofield were expected to collide and Neeraj
Goyat
was booked against Whindersson Nunes in a four-round
middleweight encounter.
