Kyle Driscoll Upends Joshua Jones in Cage Warriors 133 Main Event

Cage Warriors
returned to the U.S. for its sixth event,

CW 133
, which went down at the Del Mar Arena in
San Diego.

In the headliner,
Dana White’s Contender Series
alum Kyle
Driscoll
faced Bellator
MMA
vet Joshua
Jones
in a pretty repetitive and uneventful clash. Driscoll
(13-3, 1-0 CW) kept his opponent on the canvas for most of the
first stanza thanks to a much more polished wrestling background.
In his turn, Jones (11-6, 0-1 CW) answered with a deep kimura
attempt. In Round 2, it was Jones’ turn to shoot for takedowns,
which Driscoll denied every time. Jones looked again for the
kimura, but his foe shrugged it off and ended the round in full
mount.
American Kickboxing Academy
standout Driscoll fired back with
another takedown early in Round 3. Jones retaliated with the third
unsuccessful kimura attempt that Driscoll stopped. Driscoll spent
the remaining time grappling with his opponent as the audience
expressed its disappointment with some boos. Ultimately, Driscoll
took home a unanimous victory with 30-27, 30-27 and 29-27 nods from
the judges, scoring his eighth straight triumph.

In the co-feature, former
Ultimate Fighting Championship
flyweight title contender
Wilson
Reis
returned as he locked horns with Jeremiah
Labiano
nearly 10 years since his latest promotional
appearance. Reis (25-12, 2-0 CW) relied much on his wrestling and
grappling skills to not allow Labiano to implement his striking
game. The contestants spent much time grappling against the fence,
where Reis set his takedowns. On the canvas, the Brazilian
controlled his adversary from on top, but he was prevented from
landing much damage by a very active Labiano (13-9, 0-1 CW), who
also had to fight through an involuntary low blow from Reis. In the
third, Labiano allowed his opponent to take him down and landed a
few punches before using the cage for a fine sweep. In the
following scramble, Reis reconquered a dominant position and ended
the clash defending a kneebar. When the dust settled, the ring
announcer revealed that Wilson was rewarded with two 29-28
scorecards while a third cageside judge sided with Labiano. It was
enough for the Brazilian to take home a split-decision victory.

Elsewhere, Damon
Wilson
(4-0, 3-0 CW) kept his record unblemished after smashing
Ryan
Fillingame
(6-5, 0-1 CW) with punches with only 23 seconds left
in the opening frame of their featherweight clash; UFC vet Joseph
Morales
(11-2, 2-0 CW) did enough to outpoint former
Cage Fury Fighting Championships
125-pound titleholder Sidemar
Honorio
(13-8, 0-1 CW) thanks to a narrow split decision
(29-28, 29-28, 28-29); featherweight Jose
Mariscal
(11-6, 1NC; 1-0 CW) stopped Luke
Faultersack
(6-5, 0-1 CW) with a series of punches that halted
the contest at 4:08 in Round 2; at middleweight, Justin
Barry
(3-0, 2-0 CW) outstroke Bellator MMA alum Kealii
Kanekoa
(2-4, 0-1 CW) en route to a unanimous decision as the
scorecards read 30-26, 30-26, and 30-26; Roberto
Hernandez
(3-1, 1-0 CW) forced Ethyn Ewing
(0-2, 0-1 CW) to tap to a nasty heel hook at the 1:44 mark in the
opening frame of their featherweight encounter; Eimar
Hernandez
(2-0, 1-0 CW) eked out a majority decision over
Enrique
Marte
(1-2, 0-2 CW) as the judges assigned 29-28, 29-28, 28-28
scorecards at the end of the flyweight clash; at welterweight,
Blake
Cooper
(1-0, 1-0 CW) choked Soslan
Margiev
(0-1, 0-1 CW) 110 seconds out of the gate.
