Jorge Masvidal is having trouble getting a fight, and now “Gamebred” is targeting every Top 5 welterweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship in order to get one.
Masvidal continued his campaign in eviscerating the entire welterweight division, taking aim at Kamaru Usman and Neil Magny in particular, all in an effort to finally get another fight.
Gamebred hasn’t fought once yet this year after ending 2017 on a disappointing two-fight losing streak. However, one of those losses was a split decision defeat to perennial top five welterweight Demain Maia and the other was a decision loss to Stephen Thompson. Prior to those losses, Masvidal earned perhaps the biggest victory of his entire mixed martial arts career after stopping Donald Cerrone, snapping his four-fight winning streak and becoming the first man to beat him at 170 pounds.
Masvidal and Magny have developed quite the feud lately, with Magny calling out the “unprofessional slob” back in May. Gamebred declined the call-out and fired back in a recent interview with MMA Junkie Radio:
“The only thing he’s fighting is diabetes, but he ain’t fighting me, that skinny anorexic (expletive).”
As for Usman (13-1), the “Nigerian Nightmare” is still riding high off of his recent victory over Maia last month, dominating the Brazilian submission specialist for five rounds. Usman had been angling for a fight with Masvidal prior to defeating Maia, but is now calling for a title shot with the win.
Masvidal wasn’t impressed with Usman’s win, and laughed off the suggestion that Usman has earned a shot at UFC gold:
“That dude thinks he deserves a title shot beating Maia on two weeks’ notice. Awesome for you if that’s how you think.”
“It’s funny because Usman was calling me out saying I had ducked him. Basically, that’s calling me a coward. Now that I’m saying let’s fight, he doesn’t want to fight.”
“It was (expletive) a snooze-fest. And I get it – Maia wasn’t in shape. Put this guy out of his misery. You’ve been training for a fight how long? Get this guy out of there, or at least try to. Just staring at him – this is the fight game. This is what it’s becoming. A bunch of loudmouth (expletive).”
The entire welterweight division has been in a state of flux with champion Tyron Woodley sitting out with an injury for almost a year now with no specific return date in sight. Meanwhile, Colby Covington picked up an interim welterweight strap after beating Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 225 over the weekend.
