With a full football career behind him, Patrice
Evra is going to test the waters of combat sports with the
Professional Fighters League.
Per a release by the tournament-based league on Friday, Evra, 43,
will be making his professional MMA debut at
PFL Europe 2 in Paris on May 23. His match will not be part of
any tourney, and his opponent and weight category have not yet been
determined. The soccer star suggested on social
media that he would like to take on Luis Suarez in his first
outing, a Uruguayan soccer talent
infamous for flopping, biting and stomping on opponents.
Senegal-born Frenchman Evra bounced around a number of teams over
the years, spending a large portion of his career with the
world-renowned Manchester United team. He also competed for
Franceβs national team during any UEFA or FIFA events, including
serving as captain for his 2010 World Cup team. A captain for part
of his time with Manchester United as well, he helped his squad win
multiple Premier League titles and even prevail in a Champions
League event. The former forward, who shifted gears relatively
early on in his tenure to play defense as a fullback, retired from
soccer in 2019.
According to the organization, Evra has been training alongside
Cedric
Doumbe, a former kickboxer that shifted gears to MMA in 2021
and has not looked back.
