After losing a bid for the WBC super flyweight title to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai via majority decision a year ago, Mexico’s Juan Francisco Estrada can finally call himself champion again.
In the main event of a DAZN-streamed boxing event at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California, on Saturday night, Estrada out-boxed his Thai counterpart for 12 rounds to earn a unanimous decision. Estrada (39-3, 26 KOs) moved brilliantly inside the ropes and countered Rungvisai throughout the encounter. Rungvisai (47-5-1, 41 KOs) searched for the knockout in every round, but he had terrible difficulty in figuring out “Gallo’s” movement.
Though neither fighter was ever in serious peril of being stopped and nobody was knocked off his feet, the battle was entertaining from start to finish. Estrada seemed to be a step ahead of the defending champ for much of the contest and did just enough to win a close, hard-fought unanimous nod from the judges. One official scored It 116-112 and the other two had it 115-113, allowing Estrada, a titlist at flyweight, to become world champion for the second time in his career.
In the co-main event, reigning WBA super bantamweight champion Daniel Roman (27-2-1, 10 KOs) tacked on the IBF belt by besting T.J. Doheny over 12 fantastic rounds of action. The battle was stellar from the start as Doheny (21-1, 15 KOs) was dropped by a left hook in the second, only to rally and nearly knock Roman off his feet in the eighth. The showdown was thrilling until the end and is an early candidate for fight of the year. Roman was given the win via majority decision as the judges had it 113-113 and 116-110 (twice).
