Eddie
Alvarez could move on from a disappointing disqualification
loss under the One Championship banner to a potentially lucrative
bout against a boxing legend.
During a recent interview with ESPN, Alvarez
revealed that he has been in talks to face Oscar De La Hoya in a
boxing match this summer. De La Hoya recently
confirmed that he will come out of a 13-year retirement to
compete on a Triller Fight Club card on July 3.
“Recently we’ve been hearing from Oscar De La Hoya’s guys,” Alvarez
said. “Look, I’m fixated on the ONE Championship belt. I’m laser,
laser focused on making history and getting my world title, but I
feel like there’s gonna be a lull. The champion is gonna sit for a
bit—I think he’s having a baby. If that happens, Oscar De La Hoya
and them guys have been reaching out and, hell, I’d love to get in
there and mix it up with him. That’d be a hell of a fight and I’ve
got everyone here in Philadelphia backing me, and the whole
Philadelphia boxing [community] to back me up.”
Alvarez appeared in the co-main event on One on TNT 1, where his
lightweight (170-pound) clash against Iuri
Lapicus ended 62 seconds into Round 1 after it was determined
“The Underground King” landed illegal punches to the back of his
opponent’s head.
The former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion is 1-2 with the
Singapore-based promotion and has last three of his last four
contests overall. Alvarez is thrilled with the possibility of
squaring off against De La Hoya, who won 11 world titles in six
weight classes during his tenure from 1992 to 2008. Multiple
reports have confirmed that talks are ongoing between the Alvarez
and De La Hoya camps.
“Getting in there to mix it up with that guy would be a dream come
true,” Alvarez stated. “I actually think I’d do pretty damn good
against him. I’d be crazy excited about that if them guys figure
that out.
“There’s serious talks. They’re serious like wanting to get a deal
done this week serious.”
During the interview, Alvarez also revealed that he hopes to make a
quick turnaround with One prior to that potential date with De La
Hoya.
