Thanks to an 11th hour replacement fighter stepping up on Sunday,
Dana White’s Contender Series will still roll
on with five fights.
A proposed welterweight tilt that served as the main event between
Darian
Weeks and Josh
Quinlan fell through when a member of Weeks’ corner tested
positive for COVID-19. Signing on the dotted line as a replacement on
Sunday was Logan
Urban, who takes the fight in the same division of
welterweight. Despite the short-notice nature of the step-in, Urban
successfully made weight at 170 pounds. With ample time to prepare,
Quinlan also hit the scales at 170 pounds to make the featured bout
of Week 2 of DWCS’ 2021 season official.
Quinlan (5-0) surged into his first Contender Series appearance by
crushing all five of his foes before the final bell. A pair of
first-round stoppages on the regional scene led to his signing with
Legacy Fighting Alliance, where he racked up a
trio of finishes under its banner. This year, “The Renegade”
knocked out Joe
Boerschig in January, and followed it up in March by tapping
Dallas
Jennings.
Ohio native Logan has amassed a 5-1 record in a career that began
in 2018, and every one of his pro bouts has ended inside the
distance. “Hulk” is currently riding a four-fight win streak, with
stoppages of Ravon
Baxter and Antoine
Blassingame already in 2021 to earn the sudden callup to the
DWCS.
One fighter did miss weight initially: Carlos
Vergara, who first stepped on the scales at 126.5 pounds ahead
of his flyweight bout. An hour later, he came back to make 126
pounds, and his fight is official.
This episode of the Contender Series takes place on Tuesday at the
UFC Apex in Las Vegas, and it will air on ESPN+ at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m.
