Conor McGregor Suggests Creation of ‘McGregor Belt’ Ahead of Dustin Poirier Trilogy Fight

Specialized belts are becoming all the rage in the Ultimate
Fighting Championship.

On the heels of Jorge
Masvidal
capturing the “BMF” title with a victory over Nate Diaz at
UFC 244 in November 2019, Conor
McGregor
has proposed the creation of his own personalized
piece of championship hardware ahead of a rumored trilogy matchup
with Dustin
Poirier
.

“I feel it’s time to break this baby out for the next fight,”
McGregor wrote on Twitter, posting a video of the UFC 196 pre-fight
press conference, where he first mentioned the notion of his own
belt. “I ask the UFC to please create The McGregor belt. I suggest
rose gold and rubies. Think patek rare.

“Or yellow gold and emeralds possibly. Might be nice also. I’m open
to design suggestions. Let’s link up [UFC].”

Though the bout has not been finalized, UFC president Dana White
recently
confirmed
that Poirer-McGregor 3 has been targeted for UFC 264
at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 10. Poirier is coming off a
second-round TKO of McGregor in their rematch at UFC 257 on Jan. 23
in Abu Dhabi.

There won’t be an official championship belt on the line for the
trilogy, because a matchup between Michael
Chandler
and Charles
Oliveira
at UFC 262 will determine the division’s new ruler on
May 15. Although it’s unlikely that the UFC takes McGregor’s
request seriously, there is at least precedence for a ceremonial
title with the aforementioned “BMF” belt.
