UFC Fight Night Sao Paulo Update: ‘Minotouro’ Nogueira, Sam Alvey to Clash on Sept. 22

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira will return to the Octagon for the first time in nearly two years when he locks horns with Sam Alvey at UFC Fight Night Sao Paulo on Sept. 22.

Brazilian outlet Combate.com was first to report the light heavyweight booking. UFC Fight Night 137 takes place at Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paul, Brazil. A main event for the card has not been revealed.

Nogueira was scheduled to face Jared Cannonier at UFC on Fox 26 in December before being flagged by USADA for a failed drug test. “Minotouro” was eventually handed a reduced suspension after it was determined that Brazilian pharmacies selling contaminated supplements were responsible for the result. The 42-year-old Brazilian hasn’t competed since suffering a third-round TKO defeat against Ryan Bader at UFC Fight Night 100 in November 2016.

Alvey, meanwhile, has gone 2-0 since moving from middleweight to light heavyweight. “Smile’n” Sam scored a first-round knockout of Marcin Prachnio at UFC…

Luke Rockhold-Chris Weidman Rematch Targeted for UFC 230 at Madison Square Garden

A rematch between ex-middleweight champions Luke Rockhold and Chris Weidman is in the works for UFC 230, according to a report from ESPN.com.

UFC 230 takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York on Nov. 3. A headliner for the event has not been announced.

Rockhold and Weidman initially squared off at UFC 194, where Rockhold claimed 185-pound gold with a fourth-round technical knockout win. They were scheduled for a rematch at UFC 199 in June 2016 before Weidman withdrew due to injury. Instead, Rockhold lost his belt to Michael Bisping via first-round knockout in one of that year’s biggest upsets.

Rockhold returned to the win column with a second-round TKO of David Branch at UFC Fight Night 116. Most recently, however, the American Kickboxing Academy product was knocked out in the third round by Yoel Romero in the UFC 221 headliner on Feb. 10.

Weidman has been shelved since July 2017 due to a thumb injury. The Serra-Longo Fight Team product halted …

Glover Teixeira: ‘I’ve Got to Change Some Stuff to Get Another Chance in UFC’

Glover Teixeira didn’t look like a Top 10 light heavyweight at UFC Fight Night 134.

The 38-year-old Brazilian was taken down seven times by Corey Anderson en route to losing a clear-cut unanimous decision in this past Sunday’s co-main event in Hamburg, Germany. Teixiera has now lost three of his last five Octagon appearances, but this one might have been his most disappointing effort in several years. Teixeira was originally slated to face Ilir Latifi before Anderson stepped in as an injury replacement.

“Congratulations to Corey, he took the fight short notice, but I’ve got to sit back and see what’s going on. It’s a fight that I am very, very disappointed in,” Teixeira said on Fox Sports 1. “I can’t fight like that. I was feeling great. Last time I fought like that and somebody just dominated was by Phil Davis [at UFC 179 in October 2014]. But for Phil Davis I have excuses. My weight cut was very bad. This, I have no excuses. I can’t be fighting like this.”

‘Shogun’ Releases Statement After UFC Hamburg: ‘We Don’t Always Get the Result We Want’

Mauricio Rua’s three-fight winning streak came to a resounding end in Hamburg, Germany, on Sunday, as he was stopped by Anthony Smith via knockout just 89 seconds after their UFC Fight Night 134 headlining bout began.

Rua entered the bout with title aspirations after having been targeted as a potential opponent by reigning 205-pound king Daniel Cormier. The 36-year-old Brazilian had experienced a mini-resurgence of late, posting triumphs over Gian Villante, Corey Anderson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in his previous three outings before falling to Smith.

“Shogun” released a statement via Instagram following his defeat, congratulating Smith while pointing out that “life continues.”

“Unfortunately we don’t always get the result we want, and to understand that fact is part of life,” Rua wrote. “Congratulations to Anthony Smith. For so many times I was celebrating at this moment and I can’t take his merits from him. I dedicated myself, trained hard, and did all…

Anthony Smith: Top of the UFC Light Heavyweight Division ‘Is a Disaster Right Now’

Anthony Smith calls it like he sees it.

After a resounding first-round stoppage of Mauricio Rua in the UFC Fight Night 134 headliner in Hamburg, Germany, Smith volunteered to step in and replace the injured Volkan Oezdemir against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 227 on Aug. 4. Shortly thereafter, it became official that Gustafsson was also out of UFC 227 due to a “minor injury” of his own.

“That’s ironic, isn’t it?” Smith quipped at the UFC Hamburg post-fight press conference. “It’s kinda weird how that works out. He needed an opponent yesterday. What happened between then and now? I don’t know [if he pulled out because of my callout], but that’s mighty ironic.

“I think that I’m a hard guy to train for, I honestly do. I show up a different product every time I fight.”

After a loss to Thiago Santos in February, the 6-foot-4 Smith elected to move up to 205 pounds, where he has since scored back-to-back first-round stoppages of Rua and Rashad Evans – a pair …

Corey Anderson Eyeing Quick Path to Light Heavyweight Belt After UFC Hamburg Triumph

Corey Anderson earned the biggest win of his career on Sunday, outpointing former light heavyweight title challenger Glover Teixeira in the UFC Fight Night 134 co-main event at Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany.

Anderson landed seven takedowns against the 38-year-old Brazilian in a dominant performance after stepping in to replace the injured Ilir Latifi on short notice. After an 0-2 campaign in 2017, “Overtime” has bounced back with triumphs over Teixeira and Patrick Cummins this year. Anderson was a slight underdog against Teixeira, but he was not surprised by the way he was able to handle his more celebrated foe.

“I’m not surprised at all because that’s the exact plan: go out there and dominate,” Anderson said at the post-fight press conference. “Everybody talked about how great Glover was, but the plan was to go out there and show them how great I am.”

A victory over a ranked opponent has Anderson sitting pretty for the rest of 2018, especially cons…

Anthony Smith Knocks Out Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua in UFC Hamburg Headliner

Anthony Smith wanted to tack on another big name to his résumé, and on Sunday and he did.

After knocking our former Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans in 53 seconds last month, “Lionheart” destroyed Mauricio Rua in the main event of UFC Fight Night 134 in Hamburg, Germany. The Nebraskan rocked “Shogun” with a front kick to the chin and then clubbed away at his head with punches. Rua backed away, nearly fell and when Smith nailed the Brazilian legend with a right elbow to the side of his face, Rua was out.

Smith slammed a follow-up right-left hook combo to Rua’s jaw, sending him lifelessly to the canvas. The end came in just 89 seconds, allowing Smith to add another former world champion onto his ledger.

Anderson Bests Teixeira Corey Anderson took another step up the light heavyweight ladder by dominating former world title challenger Glover Teixeira in the co-main event Sunday.

Controversial Decision Crowns Jinh Yu Frey Strawweight Champion in Invicta 30 Main Event

Jinh Yu Frey came into the Invicta 30 headliner on Saturday with the goal of capturing the vacant Invicta Fighting Championships atomweight crown, and she achieved it. However, her win at the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City, Missouri, was not without controversy.

Frey was sluggish throughout her five-round battle with Finland’s Minna Grusander and appeared to lose four of the allotted rounds. Nevertheless, all three cageside judges favored her in the fight.

Grusander controlled the fight in the clinch, occasionally landed some solid punches and stalked the American throughout their 25-minute encounter. “Brutsku” had to fend off a rear-naked choke attempt from Frey in the third round, but that was the best offense the Arlington, Texas, fighter mustered in the bout.

Even with Frey backing up and playing it safe for the duration of the final round, the judges submitted scorecards that gave her the win by margins of 49-46, 48-47 and 48-47. The decision appeared to…

‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, Mike Perry Added to UFC’s 25th Anniversary Card in Mile High City

Also per Dana White, freaking Cowboy Cerrone vs. Mike Perry (!!!!!!) is “good to go” for UFC Fight Night on Nov. 10 in Denver.

— Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) July 21, 2018

Another fan-friendly matchup was announced for UFC Fight Night 139 on Friday, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship confirmed Donald Cerrone will take on Mike Perry just hours after announcing Frankie Edgar vs. Chan Sung Jung. UFC President Dana White confirmed the tip after an initial report from ESPN.

“Cowboy” (33-11) and “Platinum” are set to fight on the Nov. 10 card in Denver, with Cerrone looking to bounce back from a decision loss to Leon Edwards last month and Perry (12-3) aiming for a second victory in a row after taking a split decision victory over Paul Felder at UFC 226.

UFC Fight Night 139 will mark the UFC’s 25th anniversary, with the card being held in the same city as UFC 1 back in 1993.

Both welterweights are well-known as fan favorites with…

Frankie Edgar, Chan Sung Jung Booked for November UFC Fight Night Card in Denver

Breaking: Frankie Edgar vs. Korean Zombie is “locked in” for Nov. 10 UFC Fight Night main event in Denver, per Dana White.

— Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) July 20, 2018

Two Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweights will collide in a pivotal matchup come November, as Frankie Edgar is set to take on Chan Sung Jung in the main event of the UFC’s next stop in Denver on Nov. 10, UFC President Dana White confirmed to ESPN on Friday.

Edgar rebounded from his first ever knockout loss at the hands of Brian Ortega by defeating Cub Swanson for a second time just a month later. Meanwhile, “The Korean Zombie” triumphantly returned from mandatory two-year military service in his native South Korea by knocking out Dennis Bermudez in the first round last year.

Edgar nearly got the chance to avenge the Ortega loss at UFC 226, after featherweight champion Max Holloway was forced off of the card at the last minute due to “concussion-like symptoms.”…

Lance Palmer, Andre Harrison Dominate Foes in PFL 4 Featured Bouts

Seven featherweights are heading to the PFL Playoffs! #PFL4 #PFLmma pic.twitter.com/05AFHpQ9VD

— #PFLmma (@ProFightLeague) July 20, 2018

Since losing to Andre Harrison last March, Lance Palmer has been nearly invincible.

Palmer tacked on another win Thursday night in the main event of the PFL 4 card at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseim in Long Island, New York, as he thoroughly thrashed Jumabieke Tuerxun before submitting him in the third frame.

Palmer out-struck the Chinese fighter nearly 75-1 and mauled him on the canvas.

With time running out in the final round, “The Party” slithered onto Tuerxun’s back and eventually locked in a neck crank. “The Wild Wolf” tired like crazy to break free, but he eventually succumbed to the submission, tapping out at the 4:34 mark. The win gave Palmer four points towards making the 2018 PFL Playoffs at featherweight; it’s his third consecutive win.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has found a replacement for Alexa Grasso on the same day she pulled out of her UFC Fight Night 135 bout against Angela Hill on Aug. 25, ESPN reported on Thursday afternoon.

News broke of Grasso’s withdrawal from the card on Thursday morning due to undisclosed reasons, but just a few hours later, Cortney Casey-Sanchez offered her services to take on the No. 15 ranked UFC strawweight.

Casey (7-6) has dropped two fights in a row, however both were competitive decision losses to Michelle Waterson and Felice Herrig.

Hill (8-4) will look to ride the momentum off of her February win over Maryna Moroz, while Grasso will have to wait to rebound from a submission loss to Tatiana Suarez in May.

Video: Cain Velasquez Trains at WWE Performance Center

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vou-3SuFP1E&w=560&h=315]

Two-time former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was spotted training at the WWE Performance Center earlier this week, and appears to be brushing up on his Lucha Libre skills.

Velasquez hasn’t fought since a first round drubbing of Travis Browne at UFC 200 back in July 2016, as the oft-injured heavyweight was deemed unfit for combat by the Nevada State Athletic Commission due to bone spurs on his back shortly after the fight.

However, the 35-year-old American Kickboxing Academy product looked spry and healthy while training under WWE PC coach Norman Smiley and participating in a session of “DDP Yoga” led by WCW and WWE legend Diamond Dallas Page.

Velasquez already has some peripheral experience with professional wrestlers, as he finished WWE superstar and former UFC champion Brock Lesnar with first-round strikes back in 2010 to kick off his first heavyweight …

Paul Felder Considers Staying at 170 pounds Following Loss to Mike Perry at UFC 226

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lfv53eINNBY&w=560&h=315]

Paul Felder was a late call up at UFC 226 when he took on Mike Perry after Perry’s original opponent Yancy Medeiros withdrew from the fight a week out. Felder went on to lose to Perry via split decision, though he valiantly fought the majority of the bout with a broken arm and even outscored Perry on one of the judges’ scorecards.

“The Irish Dragon” appeared on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday to discuss his short notice fight talking through how the injury occurred and how he tried to compensate for it.

“First round, I threw a spinning back fist, landed on the top of his head and broke it,” Felder said. “And right in between rounds, I noticed I couldn’t make a fist all the way, and I could feel shifting and crunching in my forearm the whole time. I couldn’t make a full fist and I couldn’t grip anything with it. I couldn’t fight hands or really grab a hold of Mike when I was trying to clinch him.…

Barber netted an Ultimate Fighting Championship contract, as she systematically dismantled Jamie Colleen and put away the former King of the Cage champion with elbows in the third round of their women’s strawweight affair on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series. Colleen (4-2) succumbed to blows 4:15 into Round 3 after being thoroughly outclassed at the UFC Training Center in Las Vegas.

Francis Ngannou ‘Hurt’ by UFC President Dana White’s Ego Remarks

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRkYWTBAjCE&w=560&h=315]

Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White has a history of criticizing fighters he feels don’t perform, especially if they’re on high profile pay-per-views like at UFC 226, when a hugely-anticipated heavyweight clash between two of the biggest hitters in the division in Francis Ngannou and Derrick Lewis took place in the co-main event.

Ngannou, who was coming off a one-sided unanimous decision loss to former champion Stipe Miocic back in January, looked completely gun shy and unwilling to engage with Lewis. Color commentator Joe Rogan made the point during the fight that perhaps the manner of Ngannou’s loss to Miocic may have affected him psychologically going forward, considering his rise to fame.

White blasted Ngannou’s performance and said his ego had gotten the better of him. Although he did have some sympathy for Lewis, who also looked off his game once he discovered “The Black Beast…

Khabib Nurmagomedov: No Reason to Approach Conor McGregor at World Cup Final

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor were both in attendance at Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final at Luzhniki Stadium in Russia, but the two UFC stars never came face to face.

That might have been for the best, however, as the last time Nurmagomedov and McGregor were in close proximity of one another, the “Notorious” one hurled a dolly through a window of a bus carrying the Dagestani and other UFC fighters and employees. The incident resulted in injuries that forced both Michael Chiesa and Ray Borg to pull out of UFC 223 two days later.

McGregor’s attack was believed to be in retaliation for a confrontation between Nurmagomedov and SBG Ireland teammate Artem Lobov earlier that week. McGregor is due back in court on July 26.

According to Nurmagomedov, the UFC’s reigning lightweight champion, a confrontation in a crowded venue wouldn’t have settled any type of score between the two men.

“I thought I’d meet McGregor at the Luzhniki Stadium,” Nurmagomedov s…
