Derrick Krantz Solves Kassius Holdorf Riddle in Legacy Fighting Alliance 42 Headliner

Derrick Krantz had a deeper reservoir of experience upon which to draw and needed every bit of it.

Takedowns, positional control and ground-and-pound carried Krantz to a split decision over Kassius Holdorf in the Legacy Fighting Alliance 42 headliner on Friday at the Branson Convention Center in Branson, Missouri. Scores were 30-27 and 30-27 for Krantz and 29-28 for Holdorf.

Both men had opportunities in the 15-minute match. Holdorf (10-5, 1-1 LFA) buzzed the tower more than once in a back-and-forth first round, rattling the Team 515 representative with power punches from both hands. Krantz (21-10, 3-1 LFA) executed multiple takedowns, hunted for submissions and applied his ground-and-pound over the final 10 minutes, climbing to mount under the threat of a kimura late in the third round to close the deal.

The 30-year-old Krantz has won four of his last five fights.

In the welterweight co-main event, World Series of Fighting alum Jaleel Willis dispatched Chel…

UFC 225 Weigh-in Results: Yoel Romero Misses Weight for Title Fight

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4XZtNbyDhU&w=560&h=315]

New Zeland’s Robert Whittaker (185) has made championship weight to meet Yoel Romero in one of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s biggest pay-per-views in 2018 to date. Unfortunately, Romero did not hold up his end of the bargain on his first attempt.

Romero was the last fighter to weigh-in Friday, and originally came in one pound over the championship fight limit of 185 pounds. On his second attempt nearly two hours later, he hit 185.2.

Meanwhile, the interim welterweight title will be on the line as Rafael dos Anjos (169) finally meets Colby Covington (169) in the co-main event.

UFC 225 “Whittaker vs. Romero” -- which takes place Saturday at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois -- will also feature a women’s featherweight clash between top contender Holly Holm (146) and UFC newcomer Megan Anderson (146), as well as the much anticipated return of Phil Brooks A.K.A. “CM Punk” (169) agains…

Mickey Gall Picking CM Punk over Mike Jackson at UFC 225 in Chicago

Gall added, “Punk lasted 2:14 with me, which is pretty impressive. MJ lasted only :45. Punk has almost triple the time of ufc experience.”

— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) June 6, 2018

UFC 225 is now available on Amazon Prime.

On Saturday night, former World Wrestling Entertainment superstar Phil Brooks -- better known as “CM Punk” -- makes his return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship. In his second appearance inside the Octagon he is scheduled to take Mike Jackson to kick off the main card of UFC 225 in Chicago.

Punk had his first fight in September 2016 against the young prospect Mickey Gall. Punk was completely outclassed in the fight before Gall eventually locked in a rear-naked choke and finished the fight in 2:14 in the opening period. Jackson (0-1), also lost to Gall via submission, but in 45 seconds seven months earlier in February 2016.

In the lead up to the fight this weekend between Punk and Jackson, MMA Fighting’…

Jumabieke Tuerxun No Match for Undefeated Andre Harrison in PFL 1 Main Event

Jumabieke Tuerxun will not have fond memories of his encounter with Andre Harrison.

Power punching volleys, a shut-down sprawl and well-timed takedowns paired with ground-and-pound carried the undefeated Harrison to a unanimous decision over the Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran in the Professional Fighters League 1 headliner on Thursday at Madison Square Garden in New York. All three cageside judges scored it for Harrison (18-0, 2-0 PFL): 30-27, 30-27 and 30-26.

Tuerxun (20-7-1, 0-1 PFL) was essentially a non-factor. Harrison either sprawled into top position or executed a takedown in all three rounds, short-circuiting his opponent’s efforts. The 30-year-old Bellmore Kickboxing Academy representative saved some of his best work for the second round, where he threatened Tuerxun with a brabo choke, punished him with heavy artillery and generally made life miserable for the Chinese featherweight.

In the featherweight co-main event, Xtreme Couture’s Lance Palmer…

Brad Tavares Withdraws from Israel Adesanya Fight, Thiago Santos Offers to Step In

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrPtXhFR0LY&w=560&h=315]

The main event of “The Ultimate Fighter 27 Finale” is set to change, as Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight contender Brad Tavares will be forced to withdraw due to injury. On Thursday morning, UFC president Dana White reported that Tavares (17-4), who was scheduled to face the red-hot Israel Adesanya (13-0) on July 6, has suffered a broken foot. White also mentioned that at least one other UFC middleweight has offered to step up in Tavares’ place, though he would not commit to having settled on a replacement.

“Brad Tavares, I don’t think anybody knows this yet, just this morning broke his foot,” White told TMZ. “He’s out of that fight now with Israel [Adesanya], so we are looking to put somebody new in with this kid. I’m excited about him. I don’t know. Thiago Santos said he will accept the fight, but I’m still looking and trying to figure this thing out. Injuries are killing me, man!”

Sean O’Malley, the promising bantamweight prospect who rose to prominence on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series, could be nearing an Octagon return.

“Suga” hasn’t competed since taking a unanimous decision over Andre Soukhamthath at UFC 222 on March 3. Shortly after that victory, O’Malley underwent surgery to repair a foot injury suffered in the fight. Now, however, the 23-year-old MMA Lab product is close to making a full recovery.

“I got an X-ray last time and they said, ‘Everything looks good, come back in four weeks and we’ll clear you. I know how my foot feels,” O’Malley said on the "JRE MMA Show” with Joe Rogan. “There’s days where it’s really sore and there’s days where it’s like, ‘Dude, it’s good.’ I feel about 80, 85 percent.”

The promotion initially hoped to have O’Malley headline “The Ultimate Fighter 27” fi…

CM Punk Found Not Guilty in $4 Million Defamation Lawsuit Ahead of UFC 225

Former pro wrestling star Phil Brooks, better known as CM Punk, has dealt with an added bit of stress the week before his second Octagon appearance at UFC 225 on Saturday. Fortunately, the end result was positive for him.

On Tuesday, Punk was found not guilty in a defamation lawsuit filed by a WWE doctor against him and pro wrestler Colt Cabana, according to prowrestlingsheet.com. Dr. Christopher Amann was seeking $4 million dollars in damages for comments Punk made during on a podcast in November 2014 as well as additional punitive damages.

Testimony for the lawsuit occurred over a five-day period in Cook County (Ill.) Circuit Court.

In an interview conducted by Cabana, Punk claimed that his departure from the WWE was in large part due to medical oversights during his tenure. Punk specifically mentioned a lump on his back that was misdiagnosed as a fat deposit and later turned out to be a staph infection. Punk also claimed during the podcast that Amann did…

‘Cold-Blooded’ Rafael dos Anjos Ignores Trash Talk, Focuses on Becoming Two-Division Champion

If he defeats Colby Covington and captures interim welterweight gold at UFC 225, Rafael dos Anjos will enter the rarified air of fighters to hold championships in two divisions within the Las Vegas-based promotion.

Dos Anjos claimed the lightweight belt with a dominant five-round verdict over Anthony Pettis at UFC 185 and defended the title with a first-round stoppage of Donald Cerrone at UFC on Fox 17. After back-to-back losses against Eddie Alvarez and Tony Ferguson, the Rio de Janeiro native moved up to 170 pounds, where he has looked impressive in victories over Tarec Saffiedine, Neil Magny and Robbie Lawler.

“It means a lot,” dos Anjos said of the opportunity during a recent media call. “I’m about to be among the very few to have two belts. I’ve been training very hard to get my second belt and make history.”

In Covington, dos Anjos will be facing an opponent who captured a junior college national championship and All America honors as a wrestler. Covi…

Keri Melendez Set for Second MMA Bout, Meets Tiani Valle at Bellator 201

Keri Anne Taylor-Melendez, the wife of UFC and Strikeforce veteran Gilbert Melendez, will make her second professional MMA appearance later this month.

Melendez will lock horns with Tiani Valle in a strawweight bout at Bellator 201 on June 29. Promotion officials announced the pairing on Monday. Bellator 201 takes place at Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, Calif., and is headlined by a women’s flyweight title bout pitting Ilima-Lei Macfarlane against Alejandra Lara.

Melendez hasn’t fought in the cage since November 2016, when she scored a technical knockout of Sheila Padilla 47 seconds into the opening stanza at Bellator 165. The 34-year-old Skrap Pack representative was supposed to compete at Bellator NYC last June but withdrew from the card due to injury.

Valle, meanwhile, is coming off a similar hiatus. Her MMA debut came on Sept. 24, 2016, when she outpointed Sam Hughes at X-1 44 “The Return.”

This month, @KeriMelendez41…

Andrea Lee’s Husband Apologizes for Nazi Tattoos, Claims Covering Isn’t an Option

Andrea Lee’s husband, Donny Aaron, issued a statement on Sunday apologizing for the Nazi emblems he wears on both arms.

The tattoos were revealed on Friday, when Lee tweeted some photos of herself and Aaron at the lake. Visible in one of the photos is an image of a swastika tattoo on Aaron’s left arm. It was later revealed that Aaron also has an image of a Nazi SS bolt symbol on his right arm.

Still had a great day at the lake with my fam and certainly enjoyed the jet skis. pic.twitter.com/s5FuwYc2Y5

— Andrea Lee (@AndreaKGBLee) June 2, 2018

Aaron, who is also Lee’s coach, claimed that he has explored the possibility of tattoo removal or a coverup, but neither is a viable option. Aaron says that the tattoos represent a “dark time” when he was in prison, but he does not want his transgressions to negatively impact Lee. Aaron’s full statement is as follows:

Please read this and accept my most sincere apologies to all I have offende…

Stipe Miocic Brings Ryan Bader Into Camp Ahead of UFC 226 Title Defense vs. Daniel Cormier

It appears that Stipe Miocic has enlisted the help of a light heavyweight champion with a particular set of skills to prepare for his UFC 226 title defense against Daniel Cormier.

Ryan Bader recently posted photos on his Instagram account of a visit to Ohio’s Strong Style Fight Team camp to train with the UFC heavyweight king. Bader, the Bellator MMA 205-pound titlist, is currently competing in the California-based promotion’s heavyweight grand prix. The Arizona native will face Matt Mitrione in the seminfinals of the tournament later this year.

“Thanks for having me out [Stipe Miocic] and for the work from the great coaches and people [at Strong Style Fight Team],” Bader wrote.

Miocic will square off against Cormier in a champion vs. champion superfight on July 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Cormier, the UFC’s light heavyweight champion, was a two-time junior college national champion and an NCAA All-American as a collegiate wrestler. He was also …

Gregor Gillespie Not a Fan of Callouts Following a Win: ‘It’s Silly for Me to Do That’

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpBhBZfE2Zg&w=640&h=360]

As so often happens when a fighter earns a big victory in the Octagon, Gregor Gillespie was prompted to make a callout in his post-fight interview at UFC Fight Night Utica on Friday.

The four-time NCAA All-American wrestler from Edinboro University declined to make use of the platform after earning his fifth consecutive UFC triumph, a second-round submission of Vinc Pichel in the evening’s co-main event.

Instead, as he so often does, Gillespie talked about fishing.

“I don’t call people out. It’s not what I do,” Gillespie said in his post-fight interview. “ All I’m thinking about right now is fishing tomorrow and fishing the next day. I’ll be fishing until my training partner fights at Madison Square Garden next week and then I’m going to go and support him. I also don’t worry about winning streaks because guess what, if I lose what good is that winning streak? Some people have suggested my ne…

Reports: Michael Page to Make Sophomore Boxing Appearance on June 15 in England

Just three weeks after scoring a second-round stoppage of David Rickels at Bellator 200, flamboyant British striker will compete in his second boxing match at York Hall in London on June 15.

MMANytt.com first reported the news, and ESPN.com’s Chamatkar Sandhu confirmed the booking with event promoter David Haye. Page does not yet have an opponent for the card.

The 31-year-old Page made his professional boxing debut in October 2017 with a third-round technical knockout victory over Jonathan Castano in Greenwich, England. Page’s opponent fell to 2-12-1 with that defeat.

Meanwhile, Page’s win over Rickels on May 25 was his first MMA appearance since taking a split verdict against Fernando Gonzalez at Bellator 165 on Nov. 19, 2016. “Venom” is 13-0 in his MMA career, with all but two of his triumphs coming inside the distance.

After ‘Miscommunication,’ Yair Rodriguez Says ‘UFC and I Are On the Best Terms Ever’

Just a week ago, Yair Rodriguez was getting ready to test the free agent waters.

Now, his relationship with the UFC — which cut him for what it claims was a refusal to accept a fight — is seemingly better than ever. The tide began to change on Friday, when ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto reported that the UFC had rescinded the termination of Rodriguez’s contract to set up a potential fight between the Mexican featherweight and Zabit Magomedsharipov at UFC 228.

On Saturday, Rodriguez released a statement explaining how things played out. The saga took a positive turn when “El Pantera” met with matchmaker Sean Shelby face-to-face over lunch.

“I address to all my fans, friends and family for always [being] supportive of my career. As well I’ll like to thank all of those companies showing interest in my persona and work,” Rodriguez wrote.

“Sean Shelby and I have a friend in common, Mario Delgado, he was the connection between us. He set up a meeting between Sean…

UFC Fight Night 131 Bonuses: Moraes, Gillespie, Saunders, Wood Receive $50K

Marlon Moraes had the shortest night of any winner at UFC Fight Night 131, but he was perhaps the easiest choice for a post-fight bonus check.

The former World Series of Fighting champion earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his first-round knockout of Jimmie Rivera in the evening’s main event at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, N.J. Moraes finished Rivera with a left high switch kick and follow-up punches 33 seconds after their fight began.

Meanwhile, a typically relentless approach propelled Gregor Gillespie to a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award and a second-round submission of Vinc Pichel in the lightweight co-headliner. Gillespie advanced to full mount late in the second stanza and eventually transitioned to an arm-triangle choke, securing the tapout at the 4:06 mark.

Elsewhere, Ben Saunders showcased a devastating clinch game in a first-round finish of Jake Ellenberger to capture a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” check i…

Report: Yair Rodriguez, Zabit Magomedsharipov Verbally Agree to Meet at UFC 228

Yair Rodriguez’s situation in the UFC has taken an unexpected turn.

It appeared as if Rodriguez’s days in the UFC were done, but now it seems that “Pantera” and Zabit Magomedsharipov have verbally agreed to a fight at UFC 228 in September, according to a report from ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto.

I'm told UFC is rescinding its termination letter to Yair Rodriguez, essentially reinstating his contract. The Magomedsharipov fight is not signed yet, but is UFC 228 on Sept. 8. No location finalized for that event.

— Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) June 1, 2018

According to multiple reports, Rodriguez had been released from his UFC contract just a couple of weeks ago after turning down an August fight against Magomedsharipov at UFC 227.

“We offered him fights, he turned down the fights. There was a lot more back and forth that went on with that. If you don’t want to fight, this isn’t the place to be. There’s plenty of places out there that wi…

Jessica Aguilar vs. Jodie Esquibel Removed from UFC Fight Night Utica Card

A scheduled strawweight bout between Jessica Aguilar and Jodie Esquibel has been removed from UFC Fight Night 131 hours before the event.

The promotion announced the cancellation in a statement on Friday:

"Due to a medical issue involving strawweight athlete Jessica Aguilar, the New York State Athletic Commission has cancelled her scheduled bout against Jodie Esquibel,” the statement read. “Tonight's UFC Fight Night: Rivera vs. Moraes card will proceed with 12 bouts, beginning at 6:55 pm ET / 3:55 pm PT.”

The UFC didn’t disclose the medical issue that forced Aguilar off the card. However, Din Thomas, Aguilar’s coach, told MMAjunkie.com that the New York State Athletic Commission elected to pull the fighter from the card due to chapped lips.

“[Thursday], the commission doctor saw her lips and thought it may have been some sort of infection,” Thomas said. “They rushed her to a dermatologist as soon as she stepped off the scale. The dermatologist said no…
