Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic Announces Retirement After Suffering Stroke

Just two weeks removed from a win over Roy Nelson in Bellator MMA, Mirko Filipovic has retired from MMA after suffering a stroke.

Following that, he said, "I will never enter the ring again, I cannot let someone hit me, I have to have a control magnet to do in three months, after that I will train again, boxing bags, and there is no such thing as a fight end, but that's right, that's life."

On his Instagram account, he posted a retirement message, which via translation reads: "My dear friends, last fight was my last fight. I have been announcing many times so many times and they came back because it was stronger than me but now it's really over. On Monday morning I got a stroke on the morning training. Matt Hughes Speaks Out Against ‘False Accusations’ in Family Restraining Order Cases

Matt Hughes has denied what he calls “false accusations” that have surfaced after his wife and brother reportedly filed separate restraining orders against the former Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight king.

“Since my train accident in June of 2017, my life has been changed forever. Some days have been absolute hell,” Hughes wrote on Instagram. “The challenges and battles that I have faced have been far greater than anything I ever took on in a cage. I am not the same person since my accident, even though, everyday I continue to try to be as normal as someone with a brain injury can be.

“I understand that it is not fun to teach a grown man to learn to do everything all over again. I understand that I am a burden to those around me. I understand that I am an inconvenience to my family.

“Unfortunately, my marriage was not perfect long before the accident, but NEVER, NEVER, NEVER would I, or have I, physically hurt those who I care about most. I do not resent thos…

Ex-NBA First Rounder Royce White Planning Transition to Mixed Martial Arts

Royce White, a former first-round pick of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, is planning to see how his athletic talents translate to the mixed martial arts cage.

The 6-foot-8, 260-pound former power forward is aiming high, setting his sights on the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s heavyweight crown.

"I'm one of the best athletes in the world," White told ESPN. "Among the NBA community, part of my appeal as a draft prospect was my unique size, athleticism, vision and that I probably have one of the 10 biggest set of hands in the NBA. I think all of those things will translate beautifully to the UFC.”

White released a book on Wednesday entitled “MMA x NBA: A Critique of Modern Sport in America,” which will detail his thought process in changing sports. White, who will be 28 in April, says he has been training for “six or seven months.” He has been working at Minnesota Mixed Martial Arts Academy, a gym where Brock Lesnar and Sean Sherk have trained in the past.

Cat Zingano ‘Would Rather Have a Baby 10 Times’ Than Feel Pain of UFC 232 Eye Injury Again

Cat Zingano has had her fair share of injuries during her time as an MMA fighter including a dislocated jaw, broken ribs and knee injuries, but they all pale in comparison to the pain she went through after she suffered an eye injury courtesy of a high-kick from Megan Anderson at UFC 232 in December.

Anderson’s toe caught Zingano in the eye in the opening round of their fight damaging “Alpha’s” retina and iris.

The MMA veteran says she will need to re-think her style the next time she steps into the Octagon as she doesn’t want a repeat of the injury where she feared she has lost her eye (transcribed via MMAJunkie.com):

“I’d have a baby 10 times before I’d do that again,” Zingano told reporters backstage recently at UFC on ESPN 1. After the head kick, Zingano feared the worst considering the pain she felt and the fact she couldn’t open her eye at all.

“I thought I lost my eye,” she said. “I thought if I opened my eye that it was going to spill out on to my f…

Jeremy Stephens Considered Suicide Following Loss to Jose Aldo at UFC on Fox 30

There’s no shame in losing to the man regarded by many as the greatest featherweight of all time, but Jeremy Stephens’ technical knockout defeat to Jose Aldo this past July affected him deeply.

The setback had Stephens examining why he was “failing at my biggest moments.” Entering UFC on Fox 30, “Lil Heathen” was on a three-fight winning streak and could have moved into title contention with a victory over a former champion.

"After the fight, I was looking at my kids who were 9 and 7, and that was when my parents split up, when I was 8 years old," Stephens said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. "I was ready to leave my wife, leave my kids and just leave it all. Thinking suicidal thoughts.”

The 32-year-old Stephens is one of the promotion’s most tenured competitors, with a 15-14 Octagon record dating back to 2007. The Alliance MMA product has never fought for a title in the UFC, however.

"I didn't really believe in myself," Stephens said. "Why should a young kid …

Dillon Danis Suspended 7 Months, Fined $7,500 for Role in UFC 229 Post-Fight Brawl

Conor McGregor teammate Dillon Danis was suspended seven months and fined $7,500 for his role in a post-fight brawl following the UFC 229 main event on Oct. 6.

Danis received his punishment during a Nevada Athletic Commission hearing on Monday. The suspension is retroactive to the event, which means Danis will be able to return to active competition on May 6. Danis served as a cornerman for McGregor during the Irishman’s fourth-round submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

After Nurmagomedov tapped out McGregor with a rear-naked choke, he jumped out of the Octagon to attack Danis. The NAC levied the sanctions against Danis due to charges of unsportsmanlike conduct, as the fighter had to be restrained by security personnel and made obscene gestures toward Nurmagomedov and his team.

Danis is the fifth person to be punished in relation to the UFC 229 melee. Nurmagomedov was suspended nine months and fined $500,000, while McGregor w…

Israel Adesanya Still Believes He Deserves a Cut of UFC 234 PPV Sales

Credit: Jason Burgos/Sherdog.com Credit: Jason Burgos/Sherdog.com Credit: Jason Burgos/Sherdog.com Credit: Jason Burgos/Sherdog.com

After Israel Adesanya’s impressive win over the legendary Anderson Silva at UFC 234 earlier this month, he said in his post-fight interview that he should receive a percentage of the pay-per-view sales. After some time to think about it, he's standing by that assertion.

UFC 234 was originally meant to be headlined by Australian middleweight champion Robert Whittaker who was scheduled to defend his 185-pound belt against Kelvin Gastelum, but Whittaker was forced to withdraw just a day before the fight to undergo surgery on a hernia. The last-minute withdrawal left the Nigerian-born New Zealander Adesanya as half of the main event, opposite Silva, the greatest middleweight of all time.

Adesanya has had time to reflect on the comments he made about the pay-per-view cut and doubled down on them during Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour (via MMA …

Video: Competitor Attacks Fans During Match at BJJ Stars Event in Sao Paulo

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHgqHNtDnGo&w=560&h=315]

An ugly melee ensued at a BJJ Stars event in Sao Paulo, Brazil, when Erberth Santos rushed into the crowd to incite a brawl just moments after suffering an apparent knee injury during a match against Felipe Pena.

Shortly after a doctor came to check on Santos’ knee, the competitor appeared to begin arguing with someone in the audience before rushing into the crowd to attack a fan. Shortly thereafter, Santos, a multiple-time champion in IBJFF competition, can be seen running across the mat to attack more people on the other side of the venue.

BJJ Stars promoter Fernando Lopes told MMAFighting.com that Santos has been banned from competing for the promotion. Pena was declared the winner of the match.

“He was provoked by someone in the crowd, who was cheering for Felipe or against him,” Lopes said. “I’m a black belt for 21 years and an athlete has to be a black belt on and off the mat to deserve a blac…

Khabib Nurmagomedov to Tony Ferguson: ‘You Had Your Chance and You Missed It’

While reigning lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov finishes his suspension, Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier will vie for the interim 155-pound belt at UFC 236. That wasn’t the promotion’s first choice, however.

UFC President Dana White told ESPN that former interim champion Tony Ferguson was offered the fight against Holloway but refused, opening the door for Poirier to take his place. It’s unclear why Ferguson didn’t accept the fight, but “El Cucuy” has since claimed that “I can make 145 [pounds].”

Meanwhile, Nurmagomedov had some choice words for Ferguson in a post on his Instagram account. “The Eagle” seems to think that Ferguson should have taken the opportunity presented to him.

“Tony you had your chance and you missed it, and that’s your fault only,” Nurmagomedov wrote. “You know that I’m disqualified and can’t fight, but it’s not fair to strip me off the title, I fought 3 times in 9 months. I won and defended my belt.

Chris Eubank Jr. Topples James DeGale via Unanimous Decision

— SHOWTIME Boxing (@ShowtimeBoxing) February 23, 2019

Tempers flared multiple times leading up to their fight, but Chris Eubank Jr. was the one who had the final say against James DeGale on Saturday.

Eubank Jr. (28-2, 21 KOs) dropped his rival in the second round and essentially dominated DeGale (25-3-1, 15 KOs) the rest of the way. Eubank Jr., the son of former two-division world champion Chris Eubank, scored another knockdown in the 10th, and then had a point taken away in the next frame for tossing “Chunky” to the canvas.

Even with the infraction, Eubank Jr. was too far ahead on the scorecards for it matter and he won a unanimous decision. The official tallies of the super middleweight encounter were 114-112, 115-112 and 117-109 for the Brit, souring the moods of …

Thiago Santos Says He’ll Beat Either Jon Jones or Anthony Smith

Thiago Santos has been on the UFC’s roster for nearly six years, and now he feels it’s time for a title shot.

The Brazilian melted Jan Blachowicz in the main event of UFC Fight Night 145 on Saturday, his fourth consecutive win and eighth in nine fights overall. Santos flattened his foe via technical knockout 39 seconds into the third, which was also his third consecutive knockout win at 205 pounds.

To say Santos is on a torrid streak would be an understatement, and he attributes his latest string of success to his experience and a strong team behind him.

“I keep on improving and gaining new experience,” Santos said. “In the last fight [against Jimi Manuwa], I knew I could explode. This fight, I had to take it easier and use my experience. We studied the details and I have a great team with me. When you have a great team, this is the result you get.”

Since losing via first-round knockout to David Branch last April, “Marreta” has been all-destroying at middle…
