Nicco Montano Releases Statement on USADA Suspension, Targets Summer UFC Return

It’s been a while since Nicco Montano has been inside the Octagon, but she is hoping that changes in the coming months.

The former UFC women’s flyweight champion on Wednesday released a statement regarding her six-month USADA suspension for ostarine, which was one of several announced cases that resulted from a contaminated supplement. Montano’s six-month sanction began on Nov. 15, so she will be eligible to return to active competition in May.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank my friends, family, and all of my fans for their continued support during this difficult period in my life,” Montano wrote on Instagram. “As you all know, USADA was unable to locate the source of my contamination.  I will continue to remain diligent in my responsibilities to USADA and the UFC.  I would like to acknowledge Donna Marcolini and Jeff Novitzky with the UFC for their assistance in this process.

“This suspension has further inspired me to work even harder of ac…

Pedro Munhoz Fined $2,500 for Leaving Octagon After UFC 235 Victory

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has fined Pedro Munhoz $2,500 for jumping out of the Octagon following his victory over Cody Garbrandt at UFC 235.

The NSAC agreed upon the penalty during a hearing on Wednesday. In addition, Munhoz must pay $327.06 in fees before he will be allowed to fight again. UFC 235 took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on March 2.

Munhoz was warned by commission officials to remain in the Octagon after the bout’s conclusion. The NSAC has that policy in place to prevent fighters from injuring themselves or those in the surrounding area. NSAC guidelines state that An unarmed combatant shall not leave the ring or, if the contest or exhibition is being held in a fenced area, the fenced area, during any period of rest that follows a period of unarmed combat.”

Dana White Claims He’ll Be Making Zuffa Boxing Moves ‘When This Summer is Over’

It’s been quiet on the Zuffa Boxing front in recent months, but the venture is apparently still very much alive.

In an interview with CNN, UFC President Dana White revealed plans to launch his fledgling promotion later this year.

“I am making all my boxing moves after this summer,” White said (transcription via Bloody Elbow). When this summer is over, you’ll be hearing a lot about what I’m doing in the sport of boxing.”

After helping to promote the blockbuster bout between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor in August 2017, White promised that he was “getting into boxing, 100 percent.” During various faceoffs and promotional events, the UFC boss could be seen wearing a Zuffa Boxing T-shirt.

“I’m not leaving the UFC. I’m getting into boxing with [WME/IMG head] Ari [Emanuel] and the UFC will be doing boxing, too,” White told the Los Angeles Times in November 2017. “It’s still early. We’re still working on it. I’ve got to get my [stuff] together, but I’m getting into…

A middleweight showcase will take place at the first-ever Ultimate Fighting Championship event in South Carolina. According to Sherdog’s own sources, Italy’s Alessio Di Chirico will touch gloves with Kevin Holland at ESPN+ 12 in June.

Bellator MMA and Legacy Fighting Alliance veteran Holland (14-4) earned himself a contract with the Nevada-based promotion after defeating Will Santiago Jr. on Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. Once in the UFC, he suffered a loss to Thiago Santos, who bested the Phalanx MMA Academy product via unanimous decision. “Trailblazer” bounced back by submitting John Phillips via rear-naked choke, then by defeating Gerald Meerschaert by split decision at UFC on ESPN 2 last month.

Di Chirico (12-2) is currently 3-2 in his UFC campaign. “Manzo” is riding a two-bout winning streak after knocking out Oluwale Bamgbose at UFC on Fox 26 and winning a split decision against J…

Nicco Montano, Sean O’Malley Among Four Fighters Suspended by USADA for Ostarine

Credit: Mike Fridley/Sherdog.com Credit: Mike Fridley/Sherdog.com Credit: Mike Fridley/Sherdog.com Credit: Mike Fridley/Sherdog.com

Former UFC flyweight champion Nicco Montano and highly regarded bantamweight prospect Sean O'Malley were among four fighters to receive six-month suspensions from USADA after testing positive for the banned substance ostarine.

In addition to Montano and O’Malley, UFC fighters Augusto Mendes and Marvin Vettori also received six-month sanctions. After conducting thorough investigations in each case, USADA found no evidence of intentional use of ostarine, a selective androgen receptor modulator sold as a performance-enhancing substance. Ostarine is often found as an undeclared ingredient in many supplements and can be difficult for athletes to identify as the source of their positive test. All four UFC athletes’ positive tests were determined to have resulted from contaminated substances.

The case resolution for each of the aforementioned fig…

Santiago Ponzinibbio Issues Challenge to Anthony Pettis: ‘You Won’t Get Lucky Like Last Time’

Santiago Ponzinibbio doesn’t want to be a forgotten man in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s welterweight division.

“El Gente Boa” took to social media to call out former UFC and WEC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, who made a spectacular welterweight debut with a Superman punch knockout of Stephen Thompson last month in Nashville.

“There’s no way I’m going to allow you to be ahead of me,” Ponzinibbio wrote to Pettis on Instagram. “Come get this beating, you won’t get lucky like last time.”

Ponzinibbio clearly isn’t putting much stock in Pettis’ highlight-reel knockout of “Wonderboy,” which came with five seconds remaining in the second round of the UFC Fight Night 148 headliner. Pettis was likely about to be down two rounds to none on the scorecards had Thompson made it to the horn.

The 32-year-old Argentina native has won his last seven bouts in the Octagon, including a fourth-round knockout of Neil Magny in the UFC Fight Night 140 main event on No…

Walt Harris Accepts 4-Month USADA Suspension for Anti-Doping Violation

Walt Harris has been suspended four months by the USADA for a failed drug test at UFC 232 this past December.

The sanction is identical to the one Harris received from the California State Athletic Commission, which also fined the heavyweight $4,000. “The Big Ticket” tested positive in competition for a selective androgen receptor module called LGD4033, and as a result, his split-decision triumph against Andrei Arlovski was overturned to a no contest.

Harris’ suspension was reduced after it was determined that a tainted supplement caused the failed drug test. He will be eligible to return to active competition in April, which means that his scheduled UFC Ottawa bout against Sergey Spivak on May 4 is not in jeopardy.

The statement from USADA regarding Harris is as follows:

USADA announced today that Walt Harris, of Homewood, Ala., has accepted a four-month sanction for a violation of the UFC® Anti-Doping Policy after testing positive for a prohibited substan…

Jiri Prochazka Stops ‘King Mo,’ Claims LHW Crown; Horiguchi Wins 12th Straight at Rizin 15

Jiří Procházka (24-3-1) is RIZIN's first light heavyweight champ, as he overwhelms a gassed King Mo in round three. "Denisa" avenges his last loss and boosts his win streak to eight. The Czech owns 23 finishes, 21 by knockout. #RIZIN15 #RIZINFF #RIZIN2019 pic.twitter.com/7xkhZGx2db

— Kyle Johnson (@VonPreux) April 21, 2019

For Jiri Prochazka, revenge was as good as gold at Rizin 15.

Prochazka became Rizin’s inaugural light heavyweight champion as he defeated Muhammed Lawal via third-round technical knockout in Sunday’s headliner at Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan. Prochazka overwhelmed a fading “King Mo” with a flurry of punches at the 3:02 mark of the final frame. Prochazka (24-3-1) avenged a first-round knockout loss to Lawal (21-9) in the finals of Rizin’s heavyweight grand prix in December 2015.

Lawal traded punches with Prochazka for much of the first two rounds, and his steady diet of right hands opened a cut over his opponent’s left…

Terence Crawford, 35-0, Pummels Amir Khan to Stoppage in Round 6

Terence Crawford on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York left little doubt that he remains one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet.

Crawford improved to 35-0 and scored his 26th knockout, as he tormented former world champion Amir Khan for five-plus rounds before prompting a stoppage in the sixth. “Bud” nearly had the Brit out in the first round, where he dropped him with a sizzling right-left combo to the head. However, he settled for a systematic beating before securing the win.

Crawford picked apart “King Khan” from inside and at a distance, busting up the Olympic gold medalist with nasty hooks to the body and thudding punches to the head. Khan never gave up trying to turn the fight in his favor, but the defending WBO welterweight champion wobbled him repeatedly, mostly with his vaunted right hook.

With the fight getting out hand in the sixth, the Omaha, Nebraska, native slammed a left uppercut into Khan’s nether region, which inevitably…

Alistair Overeem Believes Another Title Shot Could Come with One More Victory

For a brief period of time in his UFC Fight Night 149 headlining bout against Alexey Oleynik, Alister Overeem was in danger. A single knee to the face changed everything.

Overeem (45-17) was pressured by “The Boa Constrictor” from the opening bell, when the Moscow native charged at him with a volley of punches to the head and body. Oleynik (57-12-1) appeared to rock the Dutchman with an overhand right to the head, and he never stopped heaving punches from everywhere. But even with Oleynik’s relentless charges, Overeem never worried.

“He was pressuring me,” Overeem said at the post-fight press conference. “He was putting a lot of energy in there. I don’t really stress easy, so, to me, a little pressure is okay. I was not stressing in there. I’ve had a lot of fights. Sometimes a fight can go wrong but [his punches] weren’t dangerous to me. My coaches didn’t like it, but I’m okay.”

Oleynik’s pressure and aggression eventually subsided, but that was only when one of …

After Besting Antonina Shevchenko, Roxanne Modafferi Targets Title-Holding Sister

Roxanne Modafferi was a moderate betting underdog heading into her featured flyweight title with previously-unbeaten Antonina Shevchenko on Saturday, but she came out of the skirmish triumphant.

Modafferi, one of the pioneers of women’s MMA, withstood quite a few clean punches to the face and several kicks to the legs and body from “Pantera” and stuck to her game plan. “The Happy Warrior” appeared to be rocked by a few punches from Shevchenko, a multiple-time world champion in muay Thai, but once the American was able to get inside, Shevchenko became the victim.

“The fight went how my coach said it would, so I listened to his game plan,” Modafferi said after her win. “I’m very proud of myself and this camp was special because I got to train for a southpaw.”

When Modafferi took the fight to the ground – which she did in every round – she controlled the pace and dominated Shevchenko. A practitioner of both judo and jiu-jitsu, Modafferi was unable to secure any subm…

You can sign up for a free seven-day trial of ESPN+ right here, and you can then stream UFC on ESPN+ live on your computer, phone, tablet or streaming device via the ESPN app. In a pivotal matchup between heavyweight contenders, it was Alistair Overeem who reigned supreme in the main event of UFC Fight Night 149 on Saturday night in St. Petersburg, Russia. Overeem (45-17, 1 NC) appeared to play possum on multiple occasions in the contest as Alexey Oleynik hammered him with punches to the head and body routinely. A loopy overhand right to the head wobbled “The Demolition Man” early in the first round and Oleynik pounced.

“The Boa Constrictor” unleashed a tempest of punches while Overeem covered up, only to unfurl his trademark knees. This pattern continued for most of the stanza, with Overeem firing knees to the body with his back to the cage while the Russian teed off on him.

Finally, with Oleynik (57-12-1) fading from his massive punch output, Overeem tied him up and t…

Devin Clark Claims Ivan Shtyrkov Hospitalized, Out of Their Fight at UFC St. Petersburg

Less than a day before the fight, the Ultimate Fighting Championship appears to have lost a main card bout on its St. Petersburg event.

On his Instagram late Friday, Devin Clark (9-3) posted a video claiming his opponent Ivan Shtyrkov (16-0-1) has been hospitalized and their bout has been scratched. They were scheduled to fight in less than a day, at UFC Fight Night 149 on April 20 at the Yubileyny Sports Complex in St. Petersburg, Russia. It is extremely unlikely Clark will stay on the card.

Ray Borg Vows To Leave MMA If He Misses Weight Again

UFC flyweight Ray Borg announced via Twitter this week that he will retire from MMA “forever” if he is forced to miss a fight again due to weight issues or something that is within his control.

The 25-year-old who has been in the news a lot this past year as a result of his son’s well-documented health issues finally made his return to the Octagon late last month to face Casey Kenney at UFC Philadelphia. Borg, who has a history of withdrawing from fights due to a variety of reasons including bad weight cuts, missed weight again and forfeited 20 percent of his fight purse to Kenney. Borg went on to lose the fight against Kenney via unanimous decision and “The Tazmexican Devil” has vowed to change his lifestyle in order to prevent this type of thing happening again.

Borg posted the full statement via Twitter on Wednesday, stating that he would “leave the sport of MMA” if something within his control forces him off a card again. In the tweet, he tagged UFC President Dana …
