Though he lives thousands miles away, UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has been deeply affected by the death of George Floyd.

Adesanya spoke at a Black Lives Matter rally outside the U.S. Embassy in Auckland, New Zealand, on Monday, as a crowd demanded justice for Floyd, a black man who died after a white police officer pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes during an arrest in Minneapolis. Officer Derek Chauvin was eventually charged with third-degree murder in Floyd’s death.

“For the last two weeks I’ve been angry. I’m pissed off,” Adesanya told the crowd. “Wait, hold up. How m…

Spike Carlyle and Vince Morales are facing potential 180-day layoffs following losses at UFC on ESPN 9.

Carlyle, who dropped a unanimous verdict to Billy Quarantillo in a 150-pound catchweight bout, must have his left knee MRI cleared by an orthopedic physician or he will be sidelined six months. At a minimum, Carlyle is not allowed to have contact for 21 days.

Morales, meanwhile, suffered a second-round TKO loss to Chris Gutierrez due to leg kicks in a preliminary featherweight tilt. He must have a right orbital fracture cleared by an opthalmologist or face a six-month sit. At a minimum, Morales is suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days.

Gilbert Burns Willing to Fight Teammate Kamaru Usman, But Won’t Wait for Title Shot

Sign up for ESPN+ right here, and you can then stream the UFC live on your smart TV, computer, phone, tablet or streaming device via the ESPN app.

By vanquishing Tyron Woodley in lopsided fashion in the UFC on ESPN 9 main event this past Saturday, Gilbert Burns instantly earned himself a spot on the short list of top welterweight contenders.

But unlike Jorge Masvidal, Leon Edwards or Colby Covington – all of whom UFC president Dana White recently mentioned as possible foes for Kamaru Usman – a title shot would put Burns in an interesting predicament. Both Burns and Usman train at Hard Knocks 365 in Florida, which would create a teammate-vs.-teammate matchup if they were booked to face one another.

If it means a chance to wear UFC gold, Burns is all in.

“We’re both professionals,” Burns said at Saturday’s post-fight press conference. “I like the guy a lot. He motivated me a lot when he became champion. We always like to work together because I had the jiu-ji…

Jon Jones Stops Vandalism in Downtown Albuquerque During George Floyd Protests

Sign up for ESPN+ right here, and you can then stream the UFC live on your smart TV, computer, phone, tablet or streaming device via the ESPN app.

Even as Jon Jones is embroiled in a bitter dispute with the UFC and Dana White, he still found time to stop vandalism in his adopted hometown on Sunday night.

The death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer last week has sparked both peaceful protests and violent riots throughout the United States. Jones himself has spoken out and demanded justice for Floyd, but that doesn’t mean he is in favor of tearing down a city to make a point.

In a video posted on Jones’ Instagram account, the light heavyweight champion can be seen taking what appear to be cans of spray paint from two people on the streets of downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico. The video was accompanied by an angry caption questioning the motives of those using Floyd’s death as an excuse to damage buildings and other property.

“Is th…

Sakai Disputes Split Decision, Says Fence Grab Didn’t Alter Complexion of Win Over Ivanov

Sign up for ESPN+ right here, and you can then stream the UFC live on your smart TV, computer, phone, tablet or streaming device via the ESPN app.

Augusto Sakai is gaining momentum in the UFC’s heavyweight division, but his latest triumph didn’t come without controversy.

Sakai defeated Blagoy Ivanov via split decision in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN 9 on Saturday night in Las Vegas. In a competitive bout, Sakai appeared to be aided by a fence grab that prevented him from being taken down in the Round 3. After an otherwise strong final 10 minutes from Sakai, judges Junichiro Kamijo and Ron McCarthy scored the fight 29-28 for the Brazilian, while Michael Bell submitted a 30-27 tally in favor of Ivanov.

Although a takedown at that juncture of the fight might have allowed Ivanov to sway the scorecards in his favor, Sakai claims the move was unintentional and didn’t alter the trajectory of the fight.

“It was something completely subconscious. It was involunt…

Gilbert Burns Believes He’s Championship Ready After ‘Statement’ Win Over Tyron Woodley

Sign up for ESPN+ right here, and you can then stream the UFC live on your smart TV, computer, phone, tablet or streaming device via the ESPN app.

At no point was the outcome ever in doubt. Gilbert Burns was just that dominant against Tyron Woodley in the UFC on ESPN 9 main event on Saturday night.

When all was said and done, the scorecards — 50-44, 50-44 and 50-45 in favor of Burns — painted an accurate picture of the lopsided nature of the bout. Burns nearly finished Woodley during a frenzied opening salvo, and from there, he never allowed the former welterweight champion to find a rhythm. Woodley spent the majority of the 25 minutes on his heels hunting for an opening that never arrived as Burns landed takedowns, controlled positioning and outstruck his opponent at every turn.

“I think I made a statement, to beat the former champ the way I beat him, and being the underdog and people saying, ‘Oh if Woodley shows up,’” Burns said. “And he said he was motivated, …

One fight removed from a TKO loss in a flyweight championship bout to Valentina Shevchenko earlier this year, Chookagian authored an absolutely dominant performance against Antonina Shevchenko at UFC on ESPN 9, winning a lopsided unanimous verdict at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday night. All three judges submitted 30-25 scorecards in favor of Chookagian.

UFC on ESPN 9 Weigh-in Results: Woodley, Burns Official; Brok Weaver Heavy

Sign up for ESPN+ right here, and you can then stream the UFC live on your smart TV, computer, phone, tablet or streaming device via the ESPN app. The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns after a week off with an ESPN offering, and all but one fighter successfully made weight. After delivering three events in the span of eight days, the UFC is back with UFC on ESPN 9, which will be headlined by a welterweight scrap between former champion Tyron Woodley and fast-rising contender Gilbert Burns.

This is the first fight back for Woodley (19-4-1) since he dropped the 170-pound belt to Kamaru Usman in March 2019. Prior to that, Woodley was on an impressive win streak that saw him knock out Robbie Lawler to claim the belt in 2016 and then defend it against Stephen Thompson, Demian Maia and Darren Till. “The Chosen One” looked good on the scales and came in at 170.5 pounds.

Evan Dunham Meets Herbert Burns at 150-Pound Catchweight at UFC 250

Sign up for ESPN+ right here, and you can then stream the UFC live on your smart TV, computer, phone, tablet or streaming device via the ESPN app. Next week’s Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-view card is getting a late addition. On Friday, MMA Fighting reported first that Evan Dunham (18-8-1) would be meeting Herbert Burns (10-2) in a 150-pound catchweight affair at UFC 250. Dunham subsequently confirmed the pairing on his Instagram, and Burns’ brother Gilbert Burns also hinted at a potential matchup for his sibling at Virtual Media Day. Dunham and Burns will come to blows on June 6 in Las Vegas, and they will likely be placed on the preliminary portion of the card.

The longtime lightweight Dunham will be looking to turn things around after a pair of knockout defeats to Olivier Aubin-Mercier and Francisco Trinaldo in 2018. Although Dunham retired after the Trinaldo defeat, the Xtreme Couture staple changed his mind and was slated to come back in April against Micha…

Tyron Woodley Discusses Overcoming ‘State of Depression’ After Losing Title to Kamaru Usman

Sign up for ESPN+ right here, and you can then stream the UFC live on your smart TV, computer, phone, tablet or streaming device via the ESPN app. Former Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight champ Tyron Woodley got real on Media Day for a few minutes. Arriving to the UFC’s Virtual Media Day on Thursday as the first fighter to sit before the screen and answer questions, Woodley sat down wearing an N95 mask that remained on for the extent of the digital scrum. Among the many topics he discussed included the hard times he experienced following his 2019 championship defeat to Kamaru Usman.

Although Woodley ultimately claimed that he grew as a fighter following the one-sided decision loss to Usman at UFC 235, he did not initially take it well.

“I went into a state of depression for a while,” he admitted before mentioning that his diet and life suffered as a result of the loss. Eventually, Woodley pushed through it. “I got to the point where I felt like I faced it head…

Dana White: Petr Yan vs. Jose Aldo Targeted for Vacant UFC Bantamweight Title

Sign up for ESPN+ right here, and you can then stream the UFC live on your smart TV, computer, phone, tablet or streaming device via the ESPN app.

A clash between Petr Yan and Jose Aldo is in the works to decide the UFC’s new bantamweight champion.

UFC president Dana White revealed the news during an appearance on SportsCenter Wednesday.

“My people are probably gonna kill me for this one,” White said. “[Henry] Cejudo has retired. So we’re talking right now about Petr Yan vs. Jose Aldo for the vacant title. We don’t have a date or a place set for that, but that’s the fight we’re looking at right now.”

Cejudo announced his retirement following a victory over Dominick Cruz in the UFC 249 co-main event on May 9. While many speculated that it was a negotiating ploy, the promotion removed him from its bantamweight rankings over the weekend, signaling that the Olympic gold medalist had vacated the crown.

While there is no location confirmed for Yan vs. Aldo,…

Sign up for ESPN+ right here, and you can then stream the UFC live on your smart TV, computer, phone, tablet or streaming device via the ESPN app.

Kamaru Usman is ready to defend his UFC welterweight title in July. The problem, according to the reigning champion, is finding an opponent who is ready and willing to accept that opportunity.

Usman was expected to defend his belt against Jorge Masvidal during International Fight Week before the coronavirus pandemic changed the UFC’s plans. However, “The Nigerian Nightmare” is willing to change course and square off with Conor McGregor if “Gamebred” is unavailable. However, Usman says both Masvidal and McGregor have been uncharacteristically quiet when it comes to the topic of a fight with him. In Masvidal’s case, Usman claims the American Top Team product has had multiple opportunities to accept a bout.

Wanderlei Silva Says He Was Offered $10 Million to Face Mike Tyson in BKFC

Tyson said no to the initial proposal, but Feldman expressed confidence in his ability to get the deal done with additional incentives.
