Marvin Vettori Pleads Case for UFC Title Shot, Rematch with Israel Adesanya

Marvin Vettori wasn’t in much danger against Kevin Holland in the UFC on ABC 2 headliner on Saturday, but it wasn’t the type of performance that turns heads, either.

“The Italian Dream” relied on takedowns, top control and ground-and-pound to roll to a unanimous decision triumph over Holland at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas for his fifth consecutive triumph at 185 pounds. Vettori’s dominance was reflected in the final scorecards: All three cageside judges submitted 50-44 tallies in favor of the Kings MMA product.

While Holland a few fleeting moments of success when the combatants were on their feet, those were few and far between as Vettori set a middleweight record with 11 takedowns. All told, Holland has been grounded a combined 17 times in back-to-back losses against Vettori and Derek Brunson.

“I knew he was really wild. When he goes for strikes, he really throws himself in. He’s either out or in,” Vettori said after his victory. “If he clinches, there’s no poin…

UFC on ABC 2 Bonuses: Marquez, Alvey, Dern, Gamrot Receive $50K Checks

Julian Marquez and Sam Alvey gave the ABC audience an entertaining brawl on Saturday, and the middleweights are now $50,000 richer for their efforts.

Marquez and Alvey shared “Fight of the Night” honors for their featured clash at UFC on ABC 2 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Both combatants were swinging for the fences from the outset, but once Marquez hurt his adversary with a right hand and follow-up barrage, he was able to eventually render Alvey unconscious with a modified rear-naked choke at the 2:07 mark of Round 2.

Elsewhere, rising strawweight contender Mackenzie Dern garnered a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” check for a submission victory over the returning Nina Nunes. After punching her way into the clinch, Dern took Nunes down, passed to mount and framed an arm bar. Nunes defended as long as she could until Dern broke her grip, extended the arm and elicited the tapout 4:48 into the opening stanza.

Finally, former KSW champion Mateusz Gamrot earned …

“I’m not too happy with what I did,” Vettori said. “I wanted to finish this guy and I was not able to. But it was a dominant win and I keep improving. I’m not the happiest right now, but I keep winning and I keep progressing.”

— BellatorMMA (@BellatorMMA) April 10, 2021 Ryan Bader is the first fighter to advance in the Bellator MMA light heavyweight grand prix. The Bellator 256 main event saw Bader (28-6, 1 NC) get a chance at revenge against former Lyoto Machida, who knocked out "Darth" in 2012. Early on, the superior footwork of Machida (26-11) allowed him to stay away from Bader's right hand and land some hard kicks to the body. However, the wrestling of the American became a factor as the fight continued. The reigning Bellator heavyweight champion kept the Brazilian grounded and delivered constant punishment from top position during the final three rounds. An exhausted Machida had accepted his fate when the scorecards were read and Bader picked up scores of 49-46, 49-45 and 4…

Smith with heavy feints, briefly switching stances. Not much damage from either man halfway into the round, but Smith’s jabs are easily the most effective weapon. Douma drops for his first takedown attempt and hauls Smith to the canvas at the base of the fence. He lands a couple of heavy punches to the head and Smith turns, exposing his back. A popular young Bellator MMA up-and-comer has her next fight booked in a month.

On Thursday, Maxim was the first to reveal that Valerie Loureda (3-0) has her next opponent set for Bellator 258. The May 7 card will feature the Taekwondo star against organizational newcomer Hannah Guy (2-1). Loureda has competed for Bellator in all three of her pro appearances, winning all three including a pair of knockouts. Bellator 256 Weigh-in Results: Main Event Set; 1 Fighter Misses Weight

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GV2e2UNzPHc&w=660&h=480] It's all systems go for the start of Bellator MMA's light heavyweight grand prix.

Bellator's second show on Showtime will see its light heavyweight grand prix begin as former champion Ryan Bader rematches ex-Ultimate Fighting Championship champ Lyoto Machida in the Bellator 256 main event. The five-round main event is now official after the weigh-ins took place. Both veteran headliners had no trouble making weight, and 25 of the 26 mixed martial artists on the 13-fight card made their contracted weights. The lone exception was Jeffrey Glossner, who came in 1.8 pounds over the bantamweight limit.

Looking to rebound from losing his light heavyweight title, Bader (27-6, 1 NC) is still the promotion's heavyweight king. Last time out, the 37-year-old was knocked out by Vadim Nemkov. Since Bader's prior fight was a no contest against Cheick Kongo, his last win was in January 2019 against heavyweight legend Fedo…
