Bellator 257 Weigh-in Results: Grand Prix Quarterfinals Set, Wilson Misses Weight

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bceYCE8Prpc&w=640&h=360] The Bellator MMA light heavyweight championship is on the line in the main event of Bellator 257, the promotion's third event on Showtime in as many weeks.

The title fight is now official as both champion and challenger made weight. This is the first title defense for Vadim Nemkov, who is facing a familiar foe in Phil Davis. The main event is also a light heavyweight grand prix quarterfinal alongside the co-main event of Corey Anderson vs. Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov. Unfortunately, not every fighter was able to hit their contracted weights as Jay-Jay Wilson came in heavy.

In his lone fight of 2020, Nemkov (12-2) knocked out Ryan Bader with a devastating head kick. Prior to claiming the belt, the Russian had won six straight fights including a split decision win over Davis. Nemkov officially weighed 204.5 pounds.

Davis is looking to get revenge against Nemkov and become Bellator light heavyweight champion…

Christian Lee Routs Timofey Nastyukhin in 73 Seconds, Retains One Championship Title

Christian Lee RETAINS THE ONE LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD TITLE #ONEonTNT2 pic.twitter.com/loVCcGnun0

— Bleacher Report MMA (@BR_MMA) April 15, 2021

Stock in Christian Lee continues to surge under the One Championship flag.

Lee retained his undisputed lightweight crown in scintillating fashion, as he put away Timofey Nastyukhin with punches a little more than a minute into their One on TNT 2 headliner on Wednesday at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. Unable to build on back-to-back wins over Eddie Alvarez and Pieter Buist, Nastyukhin (14-5, 7-4 One) crashed and burned 1:13 into Round 1.

After failing to secure a takedown, Lee (15-3, 15-3 One) clipped the Russian with a left hook, pushed him to the canvas and unloaded with a barrage of punches. Nastyukhin failed to intelligently defend himself from the assault, prompting referee Mohamad Sulaiman to intervene.

The 22-year-old Lee has won six fights in a row, four of them inside …

Eddie Alvarez Reveals ‘Serious Talks’ for Boxing Match with Oscar De La Hoya

Eddie Alvarez could move on from a disappointing disqualification loss under the One Championship banner to a potentially lucrative bout against a boxing legend.

During a recent interview with ESPN, Alvarez revealed that he has been in talks to face Oscar De La Hoya in a boxing match this summer. De La Hoya recently confirmed that he will come out of a 13-year retirement to compete on a Triller Fight Club card on July 3.

“Recently we’ve been hearing from Oscar De La Hoya’s guys,” Alvarez said. “Look, I’m fixated on the ONE Championship belt. I’m laser, laser focused on making history and getting my world title, but I feel like there’s gonna be a lull. The champion is gonna sit for a bit—I think he’s having a baby. If that happens, Oscar De La Hoya and them guys have been reaching out and, hell, I’d love to get in there and mix it up with him. That’d be a hell of a fight and I’ve got everyone here in Philadelphia backing me, and the whole Philadelphia boxing [communit…

Dustin Poirier Admits ‘Mistake’ in Calling Out Conor McGregor Over Unreceived Charity Donation

When Dustin Poirier publicly shamed Conor McGregor for not following through on his promised $500,000 donation to his charity, The Good Fight Foundation, it sparked some bitter back-and-forth between the two lightweight stars.

It escalated so much that McGregor claimed to be seeking a new opponent for his next Octagon appearance. However, it appears the trilogy bout will move forward, as Dana White officially announced that UFC 264 will take place in front of a capacity crowd at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be headlined by Poirier and McGregor.

Shortly after that announcement, Poirier released a statement in which he expressed regret for calling out McGregor over the donation, which the Irish star promised to make after their bout at UFC 257 in January.

“I am very passionate about my charity as you all know,” Poirier wrote on Twitter. “I jumped the gun and took my private matters between Conor and my foundation public. My mistake, we live, we learn.…

Jan Blachowicz to Defend Light Heavyweight Crown vs. Glover Teixeira at UFC 266 on Sept. 4

Jan Blachowicz will make his second light heavyweight championship defense against Glover Teixeira at UFC 266 on Sept. 4.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the bout to broadcast partner ESPN on Wednesday. A location and venue for event has not been revealed. It's also unclear if Blachowicz vs. Teixeira will headline the card.

Blachowicz defended the crown for the first time with a five-round verdict over reigning 185-pound king Israel Adesanya at UFC 259. The 38-year-old WCA Fight Team representative claimed the vacant light heavyweight strap with a second-round technical knockout of Dominick Reyes at UFC 253 in September 2020. Blachowicz has won nine of his last 10 Octagon appearances dating back to October 2017.

This will be Teixeira’s second bid for light heavyweight gold after losing a five-round verdict to then champ Jon Jones at UFC 172 in April 2014. The 41-year-old Brazilian has been resurgent of late, compiling a five-bout winning streak dating back t…

Prosecutors Dismiss Rape Charges Against MMA Veteran, Jiu-Jitsu Coach Rafael de Freitas

Prosecutors dropped rape charges against Albuquerque jiu-jitsu coach and MMA veteran Rafael de Freitas on Friday.

According to a report from the Albuquerque Journal, the 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office entered a nolle prosequi in the case against de Freitas, which means it was unwilling to prosecute. De Freitas, who is known as “Barata,” was jailed and charged with third-degree sexual criminal penetration after allegedly drugging and raping a jiu-jitsu student at her home in November 2020.

"While probable cause existed at the time of arrest, additional investigation has revealed that, at this time, there exists an insufficient factual basis to meet the State's burden at trial," court records state.

When the charges were initially filed, prosecutors were denied a motion to detain de Freitas until his trial after attorney Jason Bowles argued that it was a consensual encounter.

"This obviously is a case of what was consensual sex with a female who h…

Kevin Holland Doesn’t Plan on Changing Fighting Style After Back-to-Back Defeats

After being taken down a combined 17 times in back-to-back five-round losses against Marvin Vettori and Derek Brunson, it’s clear that defensive wrestling is Kevin Holland’s weakness.

That doesn’t mean, however, that he plans on completely changing his identity for his next Octagon appearance.

“Can’t say too much changes,” Holland said during an interview on the UFC on ABC 2 post-fight show on ESPN+. “We’ll see what it is. I honestly don’t know. Go spend some time with D.C. (Daniel Cormier) for sure, work on some of those wrestling things. Go work on wrestling of course. Learn how to stop some of these takedowns. Other than that, same old same.

“I’m not going to change the fighter I am and try and become a wrestler just because all these guys want to wrestle. It’s like, I like to strike, I like to bang. I just [need] to do a better job of keeping the fight up on its feet and deliver some more knockouts to the people and that way they’ll be back on the bandwagon …

One month after being released from the UFC, middleweight American Top Team fighter Markus Perez accepted an invitation from Jake Paul´s team to help him with sparring to prepare for his boxing match against Ben Askren on April 17.

In an interview with Brazilian outlet AgFight, “Maluko” detailed how what was supposed to be a friendly training session turned into a war. Perez immediately felt disrespected upon his introduction to the YouTube personality.

“To tell you the truth I had no idea who he was, but when someone related to him offered me $300 (to train with him), I decided to accept. When I arrived at his house with my friend Alexandre Pantoja, I politely went to greet everyone,” Perez said. “But when I went to shake hands, he gave me a closed fist. Then I looked at Pantoja and asked, ‘That was the guy I came to help?’”

Dustin Poirier, Conor McGregor Have Twitter Dispute Regarding Promised Charity Donation

Tensions are rising between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor heading into their trilogy bout at UFC 264.

While the two lightweight stars were generally cordial with one another in the lead-up to their rematch at UFC 257, the tone of their relationship took a turn when Poirier revealed that McGregor never followed through on a promised $500,000 donation to his charity, The Good Fight Foundation. Scott Coker: Bellator ‘Most Likely’ Putting Together Interim Heavyweight Title Bout Soon

Ryan Bader is moving on in Bellator’s light heavyweight grand prix, and that means the heavyweight division could be moving forward – at least temporarily – without him.

Bader defeated Lyoto Machida via unanimous decision in the opening round of Bellator’s 205-pound grand prix on Friday night at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. That means his next appearance, tentatively slated for July according to the tournament bracket, will be again at light heavyweight against the winner of the Bellator 257 matchup between Corey Anderson and Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov.

Regardless of how Bader fares going forward, even a loss in the next round would mean that a heavyweight title defense would be unlikely to happen until late 2021 at the earliest. For now, he is intent on reclaiming the 205-pound belt he lost to Vadim Nemkov via second-round TKO at Bellator 244 in August 2020.

With that in mind, Bellator president Scott Coker revealed that the promotion will likely move …

Aljamain Sterling to Undergo Neck Surgery, Expects to Defend Title Later This Year

Aljamain Sterling will have neck surgery this week to repair on issue that has plagued him for approximately 10 years.

The UFC bantamweight champion told ESPN that he has been diagnosed with a herniated disc and that doctors will operate on his C6-C7 vertebrae on Thursday. Sterling hopes to return from the procedure to defend the belt in a rematch with Petr Yan later this year.

"They told me I will heal in three months, and can start doing cardio to get myself ready," Sterling said. "They wouldn't want to see me take a fight until they see everything has fused in my neck correctly. Five months would be ideal, if I heal up really quick. I'm excited. The faster I heal up, the faster I can fight. We'll find out in the next three months, and get something on schedule.”

Sterling won the bantamweight crown at UFC 259 on March 6, when Yan landed an illegal knee in the fourth round, leaving “The Funk Master” unable to continue. After the result, UFC president Dana Whit…

Mike Perry Laments Recent UFC Slump: ‘I Used to Be Great’

For a period of time, it looked as though Mike Perry would have a long-term place in the UFC based on his reputation as an action fighter alone.

Lately, however, the welterweight has not been competitive, and losses in four of his last five Octagon appearances — along with numerous issues outside of the cage — have put his future with the Las Vegas-based promotion in doubt. Perry was bloodied and battered in his latest outing, dropping a three-round verdict to Daniel Rodriguez in a featured affair at UFC on ABC 2 this past Saturday.

By the end of the contest, Perry had a cut and swelling near his left eye mand his already disfigured nose looked like it might have been broken again. More importantly, Perry didn’t offer much for his opponent outside of a successful takedown late in Round 1, as he was outlanded by a lopsided 129-to-61 count in signficant strikes.

While expressing confusing regarding his latest struggles, Perry revealed in a post-fight statement tha…

Despite Eight-Bout Winning Streak, Arnold Allen Acknowledges ‘Pressure’ to Earn Finish

Arnold Allen might be the most underrated talent in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s featherweight division.

The 27-year-old Tristar Gym representative earned his eighth consecutive victory at UFC on ABC 2, taking a three-round verdict over fellow 145-pound prospect Sodiq Yusuff in Saturday’s co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

“Two prospects trying to break through is always going to be a tough fight,” Allen said. “It’s not like when you get a young prospect fighting an old veteran. Sometimes the prospect blows away the veteran and stakes his claim. When it’s two prospects, it’s usually a tight matchup. All respect to Sodiq. He’s tough as hell.”

On two occasions, Allen appeared to be on the verge of stopping his opponent. In the first round, “Almighty” dropped Yusuff with a counter left hand and in Round 2, he rattled the Nigerian fighter with a head kick. However, both times, Allen didn’t display enough of a killer instinct to get the finish as Yu…
