Charles Oliveira Talks Double Ligament Injury, Praying With Jon Jones at UFC 309

After beating Michael Chandler for the second time in the co-main event of UFC 309, UFC 309 revealed that he had torn two knee ligaments two weeks before the fight.

“I didn’t want to talk about that, because if I lose it sounds like an excuse and if I win, it sounds like I'm overvaluing myself, but unfortunately someone leaked,” Oliveira told UFC Fight Pass Brazil reporter Evelyn Rodrigues, revealing that the possibility of withdrawing from the fight had never been contemplated. “After I tore these two ligaments, the doctor indicated I should go between four and six weeks without training. I stopped training for the last 15 days and just kept doing some work out in the gym. I knew these fights would lead me back to a title shot, so there was no way I would drop out.”

Oliveira also criticized referee Keith Peterson's lack of attention during the fight, during which his opponent committed several fouls including a stream of hammerfists to the back of…

UFC 309 in Madison Square Garden saw perhaps the most accomplished Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight of all-time, Stipe Miocic, take on arguably the greatest mixed martial artist of ever and reigning heavyweight king, Jon Jones. And just like old times, Jones took home extra money as he was rewarded $50,000 for “Performance of the Night.”

For a solid performance that saw him dominate four rounds out of five, former lightweight ace Charles Oliveira set a record for his 20th post-fight bonus, getting awarded “Fight of the Night” honors. Following four rounds of total domination, Oliveira was able to hold off a late rally from Chandler in the final frame and may have secured another opportunity at the UFC lightweight title fi…

Jon Jones Torments, Retires Stipe Miocic to Retain Heavyweight Crown at UFC 309

Jon Jones could not have soared any higher—a terrifying thought for anyone who might rise to challenge him in the not-too-distant future.

“Bones” retained the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight crown in utterly dominant fashion, as he disposed of Stipe Miocic with a brutal spinning back kick to the body and follow-up punches in the third round of their UFC 309 headliner on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. Miocic (20-5, 14-5 UFC) met his end 4:29 into Round 3, then announced his retirement from the sport.

With President-elect Donald Trump seated cageside, Jones (28-1, 22-1 UFC) tormented the Strong Style Fight Team linchpin with rear-leg front kicks to the body, piercing jabs and thudding power punches. He took down Miocic with breathtaking ease in the first round and unsheathed his ground-and-pound to devastating effect. Jones put it in cruise control from that point forward. He buckled Miocic with a right cross in the third round, toyed wi…

UFC 309 Prelims: Marcus McGhee Outlasts Jonathan Martinez in New York

The Maniac stays UNDEFEATED in the UFC 👏

Marcus McGhee takes the W in his first trip to the big stage! #UFC309 pic.twitter.com/aPet3mNlMa

— UFC (@ufc) November 17, 2024

Marcus McGhee passed another test in the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight division but not without considerable difficulty.

The MMA Lab representative outstruck and outlasted Jonathan Martinez to a unanimous decision in the featured UFC 309 prelim on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. McGhee (10-1, 4-0 UFC) swept the scorecards with matching 29-28 marks from all three members of the cageside judiciary.

Martinez (19-6, 10-5 UFC) was slow out of the gate. The muscular McGhee cracked him with stout jabs, multi-punch bursts and the occasional kick to the leg or midsection. The approach bought him a two-rounds-to-none lead, and he needed every bit of it. Martinez hobbled him with a heavy leg kick at the end of the middle stanza,…

After a nearly 20-year hiatus from professional boxing, “Iron” Mike Tyson finally returned to the ring. Unfortunately for his millions of fans around the world, his return to the ring was anything but explosive.

Tyson was outboxed over eight, two-minute rounds by YouTube sensation Jake Paul en route to a unanimous decision loss (80-72, 79-73, 79-73) in Saturday night’s main event at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. Paul (11-1) showed little interest in trading bombs with the former heavyweight champ and used his youth and energy to outbox the 58-year-old legend.

Tyson last fought Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition bout back in 2020, but had not fought professionally since 2005. Paul understood that he was in a lose-lose situation from the start but still managed to find the best outcome. After surviving Tyson’s advan…

[embedded content] Meet the new Ultimate Fighting Championship gloves, same as the old gloves.UFC 309: Jones vs Miocic. Saturday at 10 ET on ESPN+. Order Now!

During the UFC 309 press conference, UFC chief Dana White confirmed that the newly designed gloves launched earlier this year will no longer be in use at this event. Taking it a step further, White then noted these gloves designed by equipment company Dyaco would not be worn going forward. The promotion, effective Saturday, will revert back to the original glove design it has used for years.

Currently heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones complained about the new gloves at media day, stating that they were uncomfortable and required him to go up several sizes. He later expressed relief that the UFC had gone back to the original set. During the presser, The Mac Life asked why the UFC planned on switching back to its previous model at this event.

Carlos Prates Reveals What Happened When He Tried to Quit Smoking

Carlos Prates doesn’t fare well without enjoying a few smokes.

One of the fastest growing stars of the sport, Prates became a person of interest at welterweight with a knockout win over Neil Magny last weekend at UFC Vegas 100. Prates is a fan favorite with proven knockout power in his hands and a well-known smoking habit, which is surprising for an athlete of his caliber.

When asked about her average consumption of cigarettes per day, “The Nightmare” recently told Ariel Helwani that he smokes anywhere between seven to 10 on a daily basis.

While Prates’ coaches used to advise him to stop smoking initially, they have given up more recently. Trying to quit also had some adverse effects. Quitting smoking for a week led to Prates gaining weight, as he was overeating and avoiding the gym.

“Before they tell me a lot (to stop). They tell me a lot before,” Prates said. “But now… I tried to stop one time and then I was one week without smoke and…

Chris Weidman’s Leg Feels Much Better Leading Up to UFC 309

Chris Weidman’s lingering leg injury is better than ever leading up to UFC 309.

Weidman is scheduled to fight Eryk Anders at UFC 309 on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. This will be Weidman’s third outing since returning from a gruesome leg break he suffered against Uriah Hall at UFC 261 in 2021. Weidman’s shin snapped in half as Hall checked a leg kick, resulting in an immediate stoppage.

Weidman dropped a unanimous decision against Brad Tavares upon his return to the Octagon after a hiatus of over two years at UFC 292 last year. “The All-American” has since bounced back with a technical decision win over Bruno Silva, albeit a controversial one. Weidman was leading on the scorecards when multiple eye pokes from him rendered Silva unable to continue midway through the third round.

At 40 years of age, Weidman knows he is nearing retirement and is taking it one fight at a time. The former middleweight champ also ha…

Magomed Ankalaev Takes Shots at Jon Jones, Alex Pereira

As he awaits a light heavyweight title shot, Magomed Ankalaev has decided to take jabs at both Jon Jones and Alex Pereira on social media.

Jones will put his heavyweight title on the line against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. While Jones has hinted that he might retire after UFC 309, he also made clear that he won’t fight interim champ Tom Aspinall even if he continues. “Bones” has his focus on light heavyweight champ Pereira instead and is willing to vacate the heavyweight title for that fight as well.

Meanwhile, a light heavyweight title shot has evaded Ankalaev despite the Dagestani being undefeated in his last 13 bouts. Ankalaev recently started rallying for bouts against Pereira and Jones while accusing both of ducking.

“Jones doesn’t want to fight Aspinall, Pereira is recovering and I’m hungry,” Ankalaev wrote on X. “I will beat Pereira and after that I can beat Jones.”

Ex-UFC Champ Alexa Grasso Reveals Broken Leg Suffered in Training

Alexa Grasso could be on the sidelines for a while.

The former UFC flyweight queen revealed via social media that she suffered a broken leg in training, posting a picture of her on crutches while wearing a walking boot. Grasso did not provide a timetable for her recovery or return.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will return to London for an event early next year.

The Las Vegas-based promotion announced on Tuesday that it will hold a card at the O2 Arena on March 2022. It will mark the 30th UFC event to be held in the United Kingdom. No bouts were confirmed for the event. It appears that it will be a UFC Fight Night rather than a pay-per-view.

Based on a social media post from the UFC, it seems likely that the event will be held in prime time locally, rather than at a time to accommodate viewers in the United States. That was an issue for the promotion’s most recent visit to England for UFC 304, as it took place early in the morning rather than at night.

Stipe Miocic Apologizes for Calling Jon Jones a ‘B–h’ on UFC Countdown Show

Stipe Miocic’s apologizes to Jon Jones after calling him a “b*tch”:

There’s a little bit of tension between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic just a few days before their championship clash.

Jones defends his heavyweight title against Miocic in the main event at UFC 309 on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. The two heavyweights have been respectful of each other throughout the build-up until recently. Miocic uncharacteristically called Jones a “b—h” in a recent episode of the UFC 309 Countdown show, which later caught the heavyweight champion’s attention.

The former light heavyweight champ felt disrespected and issued a warning to Miocic online. Jones also jokingly advised Miocic against hiring black training …

Bo Nickal: ‘I’ve Got a Lot of Work to Do’ to Reach Potential Khamzat Chimaev Fight

Bo Nickal has nothing but praise for Khamzat Chimaev even though they could be on a collision course in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Chimaev made a case for middleweight title contention with a first-round submission win over Robert Whittaker at UFC 308 last month. The undefeated Chechen-born Swede has has relied on his elite grappling during his rise to prominence, but Nickal, a former three-time NCAA Division I champion, could be the answer to Chimaev’s suffocating style.

Nickal himself has also been impressed with Chimaev’s wrestling since he first saw “Borz” choke out John Phillips in Abu Dhabi in his UFC debut in 2020. However, the Penn State alum agrees that he could stylistically pose the toughest threat to Chimaev. Nickal is also aware that a potential matchup against Chimaev is a long way off.
