Xiaonan Yan Holds Off Spirited Mackenzie Dern in UFC Fight Night 211 Main Event

Xiaonan Yan could not have fought any smarter.

The Team Alpha Male standout outstruck and outfoxed Mackenzie Dern, as she took a significant step forward in the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s strawweight division with a majority decision in their five-round UFC Fight Night 211 headliner on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Scores were 48-47, 48-47 and 47-47.

Yan (16-3, 7-2 UFC) managed to stay on her feet long enough to bank the requisite points across 25 minutes, denying repeated takedown attempts and cutting loose with crisp combinations to the head, all while attacking the body and legs with kicks. Dern (12-3, 7-3 UFC) made her moves in the second and fifth rounds, where she dragged her counterpart to the canvas and went to work with her world-class jiu-jitsu skills. The 2015 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist threatened with an arm-triangle choke in Round 2 and an armbar in Round 5. Yan surv…

Round 1 ‘Twas the night of Fightmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mighty mouse. The UFC Apex is awkwardly quiet, with no fans or media allowed in attendance for this fight night offering, so the dozen matches set to take place before and during the tentpole Bellator offering will allow those watching on screens to hear every minute detail. The parade of fights begins in the bantamweight division between two men desperately seeking a win. Fourteen years older than his opponent, Argentina’s Cannetti (9-6, 3-5 UFC) will look to show he has something left in the tank at the expense of 28-year-old knockout artist Costa (6-3, 2-3 UFC). Before the fight starts, there is no mention on the broadcast as to why the Apex is empty and devoid of media or fans…

UFC Fight Night 211 Prelims: Daniel Gustavo Santos Knee Strike Wrecks John Castaneda

THE SOUND OF THIS KNEE 🔊 #UFCVegas61 pic.twitter.com/asHYf7xYWK

— ESPN MMA (@espnmma) October 1, 2022

Daniel Gustavo Santos established his foothold in the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight division, as he cut down John Castaneda with a knee strike in the second round of their featured UFC Fight Night 211 prelim on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Santos (9-2, 1-1 UFC) closed it out 4:28 into Round 2, the action-packed battle having been contested at a catchweight of 140 pounds.

The Brazilian’s pace, pressure and power—along with his remarkable recuperative abilities—were too much for Castaneda (19-6, 2-2 UFC). Santos withstood nearly being finished twice with head kicks in the first round. Castaneda appeared winded when he emerged for the middle stanza, and his Chute Boxe-trained adversary capitalized. Santos tore into him with a relentless string of punches, kicks and knees to the head and body, pin…

📊 By The Numbers#AndStill Featherweight World Champion, @PatricioPitbull dominates over @AdamBorics in the #Bellator286 main event. pic.twitter.com/lUEzlIKKA3

— BellatorMMA (@BellatorMMA) October 2, 2022

There’s no question that Patricio Freire is one of the greatest featherweights in the history of mixed martial arts and on Saturday night in the Bellator 286 main event, he added another win to his tally.

Freire (34-5) outclassed No. 2 ranked featherweight contender Adam Borics and he did it with incredible ease, wining nearly every single minute of the five-round affair. “Pitbull” landed thudding leg kicks and scattered jabs and hooks while on the feet, relegating Borics to single strikes for much of their fight. Borics had apparently fallen in love with his flying knee since he’s scored three knockouts with it; he tried it over and over against the defending Bellator featherweight king, only to miss and be taken dow…

Referee Herb Dean appeared to be on the verge of calling for the stoppage on multiple occasions, only to allow Lee (11-3, 11-3 ONE) to continue forward. Raoni Barcelos Plans to Submit Trevin Jones, Return at UFC Rio

Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight Raoni Barcelos is not looking past his next opponent, but he has a very clear plan for the near future.

Once considered by some to be another version of Jose Aldo at bantamweight, Barcelos finds himself in a tough place now. The Brazilian is coming from two losses in a row, with defeats to Timur Valiev and Victor Henry in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Those setbacks put a nine-fight win streak in the rear-view mirror. On Saturday at UFC Fight Night 211, Barcelos will have the opportunity to get back to his winning ways in Las Vegas. The 35-year-old, in an interview with Sherdog, shrugged off any pressure about his place on the roster with a losing streak.

“I'm not feeling pressured to win, it hinders the athlete,” Barcelos explained. “I know I trained well and studied my opponent. I intend to go there, take [Trevin Jones] down and submit [him].”

Brad Tavares Booked Against Gregory Rodrigues at UFC 283 in January in Brazil

Only one of these two Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweights will have a number next to their name when the dust settles.

On Wednesday, Brazilian outlet Super Lutas reported that the Jan. 21 pay-per-view offering in Rio de Janeiro had its first big fight lined up. In the middleweight category, Brad Tavares (19-7) will square off against rising talent Gregory Rodrigues (13-4) at UFC 283. In addition to other outlets, Rodrigues has confirmed this matchup on his Instagram on Thursday. While there is no headliner on the billing as of yet, another scrap at 145 pounds was also announced earlier this week and confirmed by one of its competitors on Thursday, at 145 pounds between Josiane Nunes and Zarah Fairn dos Santos.

While he is ranked among the top 15, Tavares has won three and lost three dating back to 2018. Most recently, the Hawaiian fell short to Dricus Du Plessis in a thrilling three-round affair. That defeat put an end to a short win streak amassed in 2021 …
