Making weight was not just a formality ahead of the first card of
Bellator
MMA’s final Paramount Network doubleheader.
Bellator 245 goes down on Sept. 11 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in
Uncasville, Conn. Sitting atop the card is a light heavyweight
rematch between Phil Davis
(21-5, 1 NC) and Lyoto
Machida (26-9), where the two top contenders will run back
their 2013 match that saw Davis emerge with a
contentious decision win in what was then a contender for
Sherdog’s 2013 “Robbery of the Year.”
Since dropping a split verdict to current champ Vadim
Nemkov in November 2018, Davis has been on a run that has seen
him prevail by back-to-back third-round knockout wins. “Mr.
Wonderful” smashed Liam
McGeary’s jaw in April 2019, and then followed that performance
by battering Karl
Albrektsson in October. The career light heavyweight had no
issue making weight, hitting the scales at 205.7 pounds. Facing him
will be “The Dragon” Machida, who saw a four-fight win streak come
to an end in September 2019 when former rival Gegard
Mousasi took a narrow split decision over him. The former
Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight king left that
promotion on a two-fight win streak, and made his organizational
debut in Bellator with two wins over Rafael
Carvalho and Chael
Sonnen. Like Davis, Machida easily hit his weight limit by
coming in at 205.3 pounds.
The co-main event was not as smooth of a weigh-in process, as
Cat
Zingano (145.9) will be meeting the heavier Gabrielle
Holloway (150.7)* at a 151-pound catchweight. At middleweight,
Ed Ruth
(185.1) will look to bounce back from his first career submission
defeat against the heavy-handed Taylor
Johnson (185.7). Kicking off the main card is a welterweight
affair pitting dynamic kickboxer Raymond
Daniels (169.7) against former muay Thai fighter Peter
Stanonik (166.6).
Holloway was one of three fighters to miss weight, and the
promotion is opting to reschedule all three bouts impacted by
weight issues to catchweights as to not require fines from the
competitors. Vinicius
Zani (143.2)** came in 2.2 pounds heavy for his 140-pound
catchweight contest against Keith Lee,
while the card opener saw Amanda Bell
(149)*** hit the scales three pounds above the featherweight limit
against Leslie
Smith. For the latter, there was a bit of a fracas between the
two during the face-off, but all the bouts should still continue as
planned.
Bellator 245 will take place on Sept. 11, and prelims will kick off
at 8:15 p.m. ET/5:15 p.m. PT on Dazn and the Bellator YouTube
channel. The main card begins at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT, and it will
be simulcast on Dazn and the Paramount Network.
