Alistair Overeem Announces Decision to Stop Fighting: ‘This is Not My Thing Anymore’

It appears that Alistair Overeem is stepping away from combat sports for good.

The mixed martial arts and kickboxing star announced his retirement during a recent interview with Lovin Dubai, where he also discussed his diet and the drastic changes to his physique that came to light when a photo of him alongside Rizin CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara surfaced on social media.

“This actually ties into what I want to do, because I actually just decided to stop fighting,” Overeem said (transcription via Bloody Elbow). “This is not my thing anymore.”

“It’s been 25 years, right? We’re going to do other cool stuff now.”

Overeem was known for his hulking physique during much of his combat sports career, but after working with a nutritionist, the Dutchman has changed his diet significantly.

“I’ve been doing a lot of new things for health,” Overeem said. “This is my next chapter, promoting health.

Valentine Woodburn Replaces Injured Tresean Gore, Faces Bo Nickal at UFC 290

Bo Nickal has received a last-minute opponent change ahead of his sophomore Octagon appearance at UFC 290.

The highly-touted middleweight prospect will face Valentine Woodburn on Saturday after Tresean Gore, Nickal’s original opponent, announced on his Instagram stories that a torn ligament in his wrist forced him out of the middleweight bout. Eurosport was first to report the new booking.

“Unfortunately, I am out of my fight for this weekend and I’m extremely sad about it, but the truth is I’m not healthy and I may have to get surgery that will have me out six months to a year,” Gore wrote. “Torn scafoid ligament in one of my wrists. I feel extremely bummed but I will still be champion and I will still prove I’m better than this dude and I’m an elite fighter, but I have to get healthy before anything.

Some unfortunate circumstances forced Sean Brady to withdraw from a proposed bout against Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 290.

The Philadelphia-based welterweight recently revealed on Instagram that septic bursitis was the cause of his exit from Saturday’s card.

“Hey guys, as most of you know, I recently had to withdraw from my fight next weekend. I noticed a small blister on my left elbow after training on Monday night and woke up with pretty bad swelling and pain. UFC fighter Matt Brown first brought word of the new booking and it was subsequently confirmed by multiple outlets, including BJPenn.com. The Ultimate Fighting Championship has lost part of a big fight on its upcoming pay-per-view, but the line of interested replacements seems to be growing longer by the hour.

Per Jack Della Maddalena (14-2) on his Instagram on Friday, his opponent Sean Brady for UFC 290 has pulled out of their welterweight bout. Around the same time, Brady posted on his own Instagram Stories with the caption of “Day 4” with a photograph of him receiving IV treatment with an elastic bandage wrapped around his elbow. It is not clear at this time if the promotion will replace Brady for this fight card, but multiple names have already lobbied publicly for a slot on the billing or against the Aussie at a later date.

Headling UFC on ESPN 48 is a five-round fight between Sean Strickland and Abusupiyan Magomedov. Both men successfully made weight for the main event, as did the rest of the fighters on the 12-fight card, with a weigh-in ceremony that went down extremely quickly on Friday morning.

Bellator’s Cris Lencioni Out of ICU, Faces Uncertain Road to Recovery

Cris Lencioni is out of the intensive care unit after going into cardiac arrest during training earlier this month, but plenty of uncertainty remains regarding the Bellator fighter’s recovery.

Lencioni’s wife, Marca, revealed to MMAFighting.com that her husband suffered a heart attack during a jiu-jitsu exercise on June 8. An MRI later revealed that Lencioni suffered also brain damage as a result of the heart attack.

Lencioni has made some physical progress, including smiling and removing his hand from a bag of ice, but he remains in a “state of disordered consciousness” due to the traumatic brain injury. At this point, doctors are unable to give a clear prognosis on his recovery.

“The neurologists were basically like, ‘We have to wait to see what he can do and what he shows us,’” Marca told MMAFighting. “Because he was so, so healthy when this happened and is young and an athlete, they’re not really sure what’s gonna happen.
