The Professional Fighters League’s European
Vacation will begin in March.
According to a press release sent out on Thursday from the league,
PFL Europe will commence its inaugural season on March 25. Separate
from the Challenger Series or the standard six-division tournament
brackets, the PFL is bringing in regional talent from Europe in a
qualifying tournament of sorts. The victors of the four unannounced
weight classes will each earn $100,000 should they prevail in their
bracket, and they may also claim a place in the following year’s
million-dollar tourney. The first event will be held at the Vertu
Motors Arena in Newcastle, England.
Each division will be composed of eight individuals, and unlike the
PFL’s yearly tourney, points will not come into play. Instead, the
eight-fighter brackets will be of the single elimination variety,
or “win and advance,” as they compete across four events throughout
the year. There will be a gap of at least two months between
matches, which will begin on March 25 and then carry on to July 8,
Sept. 30 and Dec. 8. The PFL has called its first two events
“Regular Season” with the “Playoffs” in Paris, at the Zenith Paris
La Villette. The year will conclude in Dublin at the 3Arena, as all
four finals matchups will take place that night.
The PFL Europe events will air during respective local primetime
hours in Newcastle, Berlin, Paris and Dublin, respectively, for the
four fight cards. European fans will be able to catch the action on
Dazn. It is unclear at this time how international audiences will
be able to consume this content. This will not be the first time
that PFL has endeavored to Europe for talent, as the final two
Playoff events in 2022 brought the league to Wales and London, with
prelims and postlims filled with local competitors vying for places
on the overall roster.
PFL CEO Peter Murray provided a brief statement about this
announcement, reiterating, “PFL Europe’s inaugural season schedule
is set, and MMA fans in 2023 will experience Europe’s best MMA
fighters competing in the PFL’s true sport format live on DAZN. PFL
Europe Regular Season events will be staged in Newcastle, UK in
March, and Berlin, Germany in July. Semifinalists will then compete
in a single elimination Playoff event in Paris, France, in
September with the winners advancing to the PFL Europe Championship
in Dublin, Ireland in December.”
