One Championship is expanding its South
American presence in a big way.
Via press release on Friday, One announced that it had entered into
a broadcasting arrangement with Combate. The multi-year agreement
will allow for a dozen events to be aired live in Brazilian
primetime, although it is unclear if it means that events will be
staged specifically in Brazil or shown on the airwaves. The deal
will commence in January 2023, and it is slated to be the sole
distributor of One fight cards in the country.
Combate head Rafael Gruenbaum spoke highly of the new partnership,
saying in the release, “The agreement with One Championship, which
brings incredible live events and a great roster of Brazilian
athletes, reinforces Combate’s objective in giving our Brazilian
audience the very best of combat sports. We are very pleased with
this partnership with One. It’s a great step in a path of expanding
our portfolios to all martial arts.”
Many Brazilian competitors compete among the One ranks, including
both headliners of
One on Prime Video 3, which is set to take place Friday night.
Former champion John
Lineker – who lost his belt on the scales by missing weight –
will square off with Fabricio
Andrade, and Andrade is still eligible to win the now-vacant
belt. Other athletes from the region on the roster include
heavyweight Marcus
Almeida, ex-champion Adriano
Moraes and former 145-pound kingpin Bibiano
Fernandes.
