Neither grief nor Pat
Sabatini
could slow down Damon
Jackson

Roughly a week after the sudden death of his older brother, the
Fortis MMA representative strengthened his position in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship
featherweight division and
struck Pat
Sabatini
into submission in the first round of their featured

UFC Fight Night 210
prelim on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las
Vegas. The end came 69 seconds into Round 1.

Jackson (22-4-1, 5-2-1 UFC) unleashed
a devastating front kick to the face that staggered the former Cage
Fury Fighting Championships titleholder, then went to work
. He
sprawled on an attempted takedown and climbed to full mount before
advancing to the back and flattening out a clearly compromised
Sabatini (17-4, 4-1 UFC). Jackson uncorked a series of unanswered
punches to the side of the head, forcing the trapped Daniel
Gracie
protégé to raise the white flag.

Rebounding Giles Downs Cosce

Trevin
Giles
put a two-fight losing streak in the rearview mirror with
a unanimous decision over Syndicate MMA’s Louis Cosce
in a three-round welterweight tilt. All three cageside judges
struck scorecards for Giles (15-4, 6-4 UFC): 30-27, 29-28 and
29-28.

Cosce (7-2, 0-2 UFC) kept his guns in their holsters for a majority
of the forgettable 15-minute contest. Giles, meanwhile, chipped
away with intermittent punches and kicks from the outside and
flexed his superiority in the clinch. Cosce delivered a takedown
inside the first 30 seconds of Round 3 but failed to consolidate it
with anything outside of positional control. Giles managed to
return to his feet and stay out of danger, settling for the
decision.

The victory was Giles’ first since March 20, 2021.

Suphisara Outduels Debuting Gomes

Bangtao MMA export Konklak
Suphisara
bounced back from a Nov. 20 decision loss to Lupita
Godinez
with a unanimous decision over Denise
Gomes
in a three-round women’s strawweight battle. Scores were
30-27, 30-27 and 29-28, all for Suphisara (7-3, 4-2 UFC).

A short-notice fill-in for Diana
Belbita
, Gomes (6-2, 0-1 UFC) was a step behind “Looma
Lookboonme” for much of the match. Suphisara opened a cut near the
Parana Vale Tudo prospect’s hairline with an elbow strike in the
first round, sat her down with a front kick to the chest and kept
her guessing with foot sweeps and head-and-arm throws.
Nevertheless, Gomes had her chance. She swept into top position
under threat of a heel hook in the third round, climbed to the
back, pinched down on a body triangle and alternated between
ground-and-pound and attempted chokes. Those efforts failed,
allowing Suphisara to escape to the safety of her feet, where she
chewed up the remaining time.

The defeat halted Gomes’ run of consecutive wins at six.

Ogden Handles Newcomer Zellhuber

Former Fury Fighting Championship titleholder Trey Ogden
outstruck and outmaneuvered promising Xtreme Couture prospect
Daniel
Zellhuber
in a three-round lightweight clash. Ogden (16-5, 1-1
UFC) swept the scorecards with 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 marks from
the three-person judiciary.

Zellhuber (12-1, 0-1 UFC) started in neutral and never truly
shifted into a higher gear. Ogden pecked away with jabs and lead
left hooks from the outside, incorporated a takedown late in the
second round and exploited a promotional newcomer who seemed
patient to a fault. Zellhuber showed no real sense of urgency down
the stretch despite his corner imploring him to do so, leaving his
fate in the hands of the judges.

Ogden, 32, has rattled off four victories in five appearances.

Robertson Chokes Agapova Unconscious

“The Ultimate Fighter” Season 26 graduate Gillian
Robertson
put Maria Agapova to sleep with a rear-naked choke in
the second round of their women’s flyweight pairing. A short-notice
substitution for Melissa Gatta, American Top Team’s Agapova (10-4,
2-3 UFC) slipped into the abyss 2:19 into Round 2.

Robertson (11-7, 8-UFC) did not escape unscathed. Agapova defended
takedowns with damaging elbows and hammerfists along the fence in
the first round but could not keep the determined Brazilian
jiu-jitsu black belt at bay. Robertson executed a takedown inside
the first minute of the middle stanza,
climbed to full mount and ultimately progressed to the back, at
which point she cinched the choke
. Agapova failed miserably in
a feeble attempt to escape the maneuver before losing consciousness
in the Canadian’s capable clutches.

The 25-year-old Agapova has lost three of her last four fights.

Unbeaten Basharat Sinks Gravely

Clean combination punching, an effective sprawl and vastly superior
offensive output carried Javid
Basharat
to a unanimous decision over American Top Team’s
Tony
Gravely
in a three-round bantamweight affair. All three
cageside judges scored it the same: 29-28 for Basharat (13-0, 2-0
UFC).

Gravely (23-8, 4-3 UFC) held his own throughout a competitive first
round but ceded more and more ground as the bout progressed. Cut
above the left eye by an inadvertent clash of heads, the aggravated
but undeterred Basharat pieced his punches together, mixed in a few
takedowns and incorporated more of his weapons once fatigue and
frustration set in on his counterpart, connecting with a standing
vertical elbow at close range in one of their later exchanges.

The setback closed the book on Gravely’s two-fight winning
streak.

Motta Punches Bury VanCamp

Xtreme Couture’s Nikolas
Motta
rebounded from his Feb. 19 defeat to Jim Miller,
as he cut down Cameron
VanCamp
with a left hook and follow-up punches in the first
round of their lightweight encounter. VanCamp (15-7-1, 0-2 UFC)
succumbed to blows 3:49 into Round 1.

Motta (13-4, 1-1 UFC) fought with patience and purpose. He struck
well in combination, controlled the center of the cage and forced
the 6-foot-1 VanCamp to settle onto his back foot. Motta sat down
the onetime Chosen Few Fighting Championships titleholder with a
left hook, assumed a dominant position and
sealed the deal with a volley of unanswered punches on the
ground
.

VanCamp, 29, has lost back-to-back bouts since he joined the UFC
roster in May.
