Conor McGregor Plans on ‘Walking Straight to a Title Shot’ in Targeted 2022 Return

Conor McGregor is currently in the midst of recovery from a
gruesomely broken leg suffered in a loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC
264, but the Irish superstar remains optimistic about his
comeback.

During a Twitter Q&A session on Sunday, McGregor briefly
discussed when he expected to fight again after the injury that
ended his trilogy bout with Poirier after just one round on July
11. Shortly thereafter, the Dublin native
underwent surgery
where an intramedullary rod was inserted into
his tibia and a small plate and screws were attached to his
fibula.

“2022. I’m improving rapidly!” McGregor wrote regarding his
targeted return date. “Working with the best team money can buy!
I’ll be back in no time, lock loaded!”

McGregor began his UFC tenure at 145 pounds, where he captured a
championship before moving to lightweight and becoming a
simultaneous two-division champion. The “Notorious” one has
competed at 155 and 170 pounds in recent years. He admitted that he
is considering welterweight for his comeback fight.

Although kicking may have contributed to the broken leg suffered at
UFC 264, McGregor is confident he will be able to use his lower
limbs upon is Octagon return. And when he is fully healthy, the SBG
Ireland stalwart expects to be right back in the championship mix,
despite his recent struggles.

“Possibly,” McGregor wrote when asked if a transition to boxing is
imminnent. “The leg tho will be more than equipped to kick. I am
billi walking straight to a title shot on my return and it sickens
the bums of this business. Which is the real reason these constant
disrespectful comments come by way. God bless them.”

Now 33 years old, McGregor has won just one of his last four UFC
appearances dating back to 2018 and has been finished in all of his
defeats. Still, as evidenced by the
estimated 1.8 million pay-per-view buys sold
for UFC 264, he
remains the sport’s top draw.
