Cage Warriors will begin its journey to crown a new 170-pound
champion with the semifinals of a welterweight tournament on March
19.
The European promotion recently announced that Ian Garry
will face Rostem
Akman and Jack Grant
will meet Madars Fleminas at Cage Warriors 121. The winners of the
semifinal bouts will advance to vie for welterweight gold later
this year.
“The welterweight division needs a new champion and there is no
shortage of contenders,” Cage Warriors president Graham Boylan said
in a release. “MMA fans love nothing more than a grand prix,
and I am so excited to see how this one plays out.”
Garry has amassed a 5-0 record under the Cage Warriors banner and
is coming off back-to-back TKO finishes of Lawrence Jordan
Tracey and George
McManus in 2020. Akman will make his promotional debut after a
pair of decision losses against Sergey
Khandozhko and Jake
Matthews in the UFC saw him fall to 6-2 as a professional.
A winner in 16 of his 22 professional bouts, Grant has twice
challenged for the lightweight title, falling to Agy Sardari
via split decision last December and suffering a third-round TKO
defeat against Jai Herbert
at Cage Warriors 106 in June 2019. Latvia’s Fleminars halted a
two-bout skid in his last outing, as he outpointed Mick
Stanton at Cage Warriors 118 on Dec. 11.
Cage Warriors 121 takes place at York Hall in London and features a
lightweight title clash between Agy Sardari
and Mehdi
Ben Lakhdhar and a bantamweight championship matchup pitting
Jack
Cartwright against Sylwester
Miller. The card will stream on UFC Fight Pass.
