Even with money tight internationally, the Professional Fighters League has added a
significant investment to its already sizeable war chest.
On Thursday, the promotion sent out a press release announcing that
a new investment from Ares Capital, Elysian Park Ventures and
Knighthead Capital totaling $65 has been added to the PFL’s budget.
This addition to the PFL’s funding that already combined for $110
million now totals a whopping $175 million. Per broadcast partner
ESPN,
a significant amount of this figure will be spent on free agent
acquisitions.
The tournament-centric league, which took off the whole of 2020 due
to coronavirus pandemic, has bolstered its ranks in its extended
offseason. In addition to retaining the services of its previous
champions like Lance
Palmer, Ray Cooper
III and Kayla
Harrison, it has also gathered some big-name free agents.
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship champs Fabricio
Werdum and Anthony
Pettis have
joined the roster, as well as ex-Bellator MMA champion Rory
MacDonald among the other
solid free agents like Tom Lawlor
and Olivier
Aubin-Mercier. With these acquisitions, the organization has
declared on numerous occasions including its press release that it
is the “No. 2 MMA company worldwide.”
PFL Chairman and Co-Founder Donn Davis was ecstatic at this new
line of funding, stating, “PFL is the disruptive company in the
massive and underserved MMA market, and this new capital will fuel
our aggressive growth from the No. 2 worldwide market position the
company has quickly secured.”
The first event of the PFL 2021 season will kick off on April 23,
with six events taking place in the Regular Season on the 23rd as
well as April 29 and May 6 for the first section of bouts. The
season concludes with June 10, June 17 and June 25 fight cards to
lead into the playoffs. The shows will all broadcast on either
ESPN2 or ESPN+ in the U.S., and will be on various other networks
internationally.
