Ultimate Fighting Championship kicks off 2021 with a return to
network television as it puts on its first show on the American
Broadcasting Company. Headlining
UFC on ABC 1 is a featherweight bout between former king
Max
Holloway and surging contender Calvin
Kattar. The 11-fight card is now official after the weigh-ins
took place, and all fighters managed to make weight.
Many fans don’t believe that Holloway (21-6) should be called a
former champion. Many spectators thought “Blessed” did enough to
win his rematch against Alexander
Volkanovski, but the Hawaiian was on the wrong side of a split
decision. Prior to losing back-to-back bouts against Volkanovski,
Holloway had gone on an incredible featherweight win streak
spanning 14 bouts (with a lightweight loss to Dustin
Poirier sprinkled in). Holloway will look to get back into
title contention with a victory, looking great on the scales
weighing 146 pounds.
With three knockouts in his past five bouts, Kattar (22-4) has
established himself as a threat on the feet. “The Boston Finisher”
has 11 knockout victories on his record, and is coming off big wins
over Dan
Ige and Jeremy
Stephens. Kattar has faltered against both Renato
Carneiro and Zabit
Magomedsharipov inside the UFC, so he’ll look to notch the
biggest win of his career against Holloway. The Massachusetts
fighter officially weighed in at 146 pounds.
An early fight card, UFC on ABC 1’s five-fight main card will begin
at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT and air simultaneously on ABC and ESPN+.
The preliminary portion will stream at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT on
ESPN+.
