Cage Warriors Fighting Championship crowned a new featherweight
title holder in its third and final event of the “Trilogy Strikes
Back” series on Saturday at York Hall in London.
In the main event of
Cage Warriors 119, Morgan
Charriere (16-7-1) locked horns with Perry
Goodwin (10-8) for the vacant featherweight belt. “The Last
Pirate” started testing Goodwin’s chin with heavy combinations as
soon as the fight began, but it was Charriere’s kicks that impacted
his opponent the most. A few minutes into the contest, Goodwin was
already bearing the marks of his opponent’s shots.
In the second stanza, Charriere involuntarily hit Goodwin with a
low blow. After recovering from it, “The Predator” took some severe
punishment to his lead leg before Charriere took him down. Goodwin
tried a guillotine choke, but the Frenchman defended it well. The
third round saw Charriere open a cut over Goodwin’s left eye. A few
seconds later, “The Last Pirate” hit Goodwin’s liver hard, and the
British fighter immediately dropped on the canvas. Charriere
managed to land a last follow-up punch on a crouching opponent
before the referee stepped in to stop the contest at the 1:25 mark
of Round 3.
The co-main event featured a 155-pound championship affair between
Jack
Grant and CW newcomer Agy
Sardari. The contenders took their time to study each other’s
reactions, stinging one another with leg kicks in the opening
rounds. Starting the second stanza, the challenger started growing
in confidence as Grant’s bore the marks of Sardari’s kicks.
In the championship rounds, “The Wolverine” imposed his wrestling
over an exhausted Grant. The British fighter looked for a heel hook
and an omoplata, but it was to no avail. Eventually, “The
Wolverine” took home a split decision. The scorecards read 49-46,
48-47 in favor of Sardari, and 48-47 in favor of Grant.
Elsewhere, Jordan
Vucenic (7-1) stopped the hype train for Paul Hughes
(6-1) after edging his opponent thanks to a narrow decision at the
end of a featherweight barnburner. Hughes proved to be the most
skilled fighter on the ground, but Vucenic looked to have an edge
over his opponent on the feet. Eventually, two of the judges
rewarded “The Academic” with the victory, while the third judge
gave it to Hughes.
In a 170-pound affair, Ian Garry
(5-0) mauled Lawrence Tracey (5-5) in the opening stanza with a
sequence of vicious unanswered punches and elbows that forced the
referee to stop the action at the 4:02 mark. Earlier that night,
Joe
McColgan (7-3-1) handed Kieran
Lister (7-1-1) his first career defeat in their lightweight
encounter. “The SBG Hunter” cracked Lister with a right uppercut
and finished him off with a few follow-up punches. The official
time indicated 4:47 into Round 1.
On the preliminary card, Will Currie
(5-0) stayed undefeated by taking a unanimous verdict over Dario
Bellandi (2-1) in a 192-pound catchweight matchup and Christian
Duncan (2-0) smashed Lukasz Marcinkowski (4-3) after landing a
highlight-reel spinning heel kick followed by a few punches at the
1:00 mark of Round 1 in the middleweight division.
