ESPN app. Iron will once again sharpen iron, as two Brazilian
legends will train together to prepare for a big matchup. Following the
story released on Wednesday, former lightweight king Rafael dos
Anjos (29-13) has confirmed his return to the lightweight
division against Islam
Makhachev (18-1) at
UFC 254. The two will be squaring off on Oct. 24, and the
location has not yet been determined although it is likely slated
for Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. In his return to
the division he ruled from 2014 to 2015, dos Anjos will be changing
up his training and going to
Nova Uniao.
Ex-featherweight champ Jose Aldo
revealed to Brazilian outlet
Ag. Fight on Thursday that dos Anjos will be joining him in the
camp. According to Aldo, everything began when dos Anjos reached
out to find the nutritionist that helped Aldo reach the 135-pound
division twice. From there, the two struck up a kinship after
sharing the same trainer, and they decided to train together.
“I told him about the amount of top lightweight fighters we have
here in Nova Uniao,” Aldo said, “and of course the leadership of
Dede [Andre
Pederneiras] were two important points of his decision.”
Former champions Aldo and dos Anjos are in similar situations in
UFC. When he moved up a division, dos Anjos went 4-4 as a
welterweight, earning victories over Robbie
Lawler, Neil Magny,
Kevin
Lee and Tarec
Saffiedine. The longtime lightweight had struggled recently,
losing four of five inside the Octagon. Formerly representing
Kings MMA, dos Anjos has struggled to find a home with Evolve
MMA and his own RDA Academy, before making the choice to join
the ranks of Nova Uniao.
Considered the best featherweight fighter in MMA history, Aldo is
coming off two defeats in his new division of bantamweight. Before
leave his natural category, Aldo had won and lost three following
the loss of his crown and nine years of invincibility to Conor
McGregor. Aldo concluded by noting that he was planning on
taking a fight some time in November, so that their training camps
will coincide with one another.
