On Friday, MMA Fighting reported first that Evan Dunham (18-8-1) would be meeting Herbert Burns (10-2) in a 150-pound catchweight affair at UFC 250. Dunham subsequently confirmed the pairing on his Instagram, and Burns’ brother Gilbert Burns also hinted at a potential matchup for his sibling at Virtual Media Day. Dunham and Burns will come to blows on June 6 in Las Vegas, and they will likely be placed on the preliminary portion of the card.
The longtime lightweight Dunham will be looking to turn things around after a pair of knockout defeats to Olivier Aubin-Mercier and Francisco Trinaldo in 2018. Although Dunham retired after the Trinaldo defeat, the Xtreme Couture staple changed his mind and was slated to come back in April against Michael Johnson. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event was scratched and Johnson was re-booked against Thiago Moises in May. A pro since 2007, Dunham’s UFC debut in 2009 came three years before his opponent made his first professional appearance.
Brazil’s Burns will be looking to continue a streak that has seen him stop his last four does within two rounds. Making a statement by tapping Darrick Minner with a triangle armbar on Dana White’s Contender Series in August 2019, Burns made a splash by smashing Nate Landwehr in January. A jiu-jitsu practitioner by trade, the knockout of Landwehr was Burns’ first in his career. The entirety of Burns’ career has come in the featherweight division.
UFC 250 goes down on June 6 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Headlining the pay-per-view event is a women’s featherweight championship matchup as Amanda Nunes defends her throne against Felicia Spencer. The co-featured bout sees former bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt take on perennial contender Raphael Assuncao.
