Newly crowned heavyweight boxing champion Andy Ruiz Jr. shocked the world, and his opponent, last month when he finished British boxing star Anthony Joshua in the seventh round of their Madison Square Garden showdown in New York.
Ruiz recently declared his intentions for the expected November/December rematch to gathered media. “I know his flaws,” he said. “I can do a lot better. The only thing that he can do is just run around, he’s not good at boxing.”
After Ruiz’s standout performance against the once-heavyweight king, the Mexican-American from Imperial, California, has enjoyed a waterfall of accolades and attention, even receiving a parade in his hometown. But Ruiz remains focused and determined to send a clear message to all doubters, including his opponent.
“The rematch is going to be the same. I am going to be more prepared and more ready. People thought I wasn’t going to do anything, I was too big, too overweight,” said Ruiz. The heavyweight champ, who was called in on short notice to face the UK powerhouse, knocked Joshua down four times in their upset scrap.
“There is going to be a lot of changing, I am going to come at a better weight this time. It’s going to be a hell of a fight.”
